More of the same... Glaxo's Phase II trials of an experimental MS treatment, referred to as 683699, have been halted because the drug is considered to be in the same class as Tysabri-- an alpha-4 integrin blocker. This halt is a precautionary measure and not based on any adverse reactions seen thus far.

Glaxo maintains that the drug is chemically different than Tysabri, and likewise the drug is in pill form, versus Tysabri's monthly intravenous administration. About 400 patients had received the therapy thus far, and it was scheduled to seek approval in 2008.

"GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Europe's biggest drugmaker, said U.S. regulators suspended clinical trials of its experimental multiple sclerosis drug because it's in the same class as the recently withdrawn Tysabri medication."
