Laquinimod (oral therapy) Successful in Phase II Trial

LaquinimodSome more good, if a bit dated, news... Results from the Phase II (dosing) trials of Teva''s laquinimod, an oral immunomodulator for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, have been published in the journal Neurology. This trial was finished in late 2003, so there''s been quite a gap between completion and publication.

The trial compared 2 daily doses of the pill versus placebo in the ability to suppress active lesion development as seen on MRI. Results show that laquinimod reduced those lesions by 44% compared to placebo, without serious side effects.

Of course, MRI results do not immediately translate to disease stabilization (as demonstrated by the primary progressive phase), so at this early stage it seems fair to classify laquinimod as comparable to the interferons/Copaxone in terms of efficacy, but with a vastly improved dosing and side effect profile (2 pills a day, no "flu-like" symptoms!). Furthermore, the study abstract noted:

"No differences with respect to clinical variables (relapses, disability) were found."

Parallel phase II trials are currently underway to determine the most efficacious dose, in preparation for the phase III trials which will look for clinical benefit.

The article is titled: "Treatment with laquinimod reduces development of active MRI lesions in relapsing MS" by C. Polman, F. Barkhof, M. Sandberg-Wollheim, A. Linde, O. Nordle and T. Nederman"

News: Talk with Teva and Active Biotech about Laquinimod (Oral Therapy for MS)

Laquinimod An open invitation from Active Biotech (laquinimod-- oral treatment for MS currently in trials) for their general MS update meeting with Teva (makers of Copaxone), who has partnered with them to bring laquinimod to market. Besides being informative on its own, this will give a rare chance to ask pointed questions about the MS drug pipeline from one of the leading companies coupled with one of the most promising. Note that this meeting will be held in Sweden, so adjust the start time appropriately.

"[Active Biotech] will, together with representatives from Teva senior management, inform on the companies'' presence and activities in the multiple sclerosis (MS) market.

An update of Active Biotech''s other projects will also be given.

Date: Tuesday, October 19, 2004
Time: 13:00 - 15:00
Place: IVA (The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences), Grev Turegatan 16, Stockholm

Kindly send your notification to participate, including name, company, telephone number and e-mail address, before October 12, to Susanne Jonsson, Fax: +46 46 19 20 50 or susanne.jonsson@activebiotech.com"

News: Teva to support Oral MS Therapy Research (Laquinimod)

Laquinimod

The first news we''ve heard on laquinimod for a while-- this is an ORAL immunomodulatory treatment being studied for MS. Having Copaxone''s Teva behind the drug is a very positive sign as they have the resources to bring this drug through trials and to market.  Also interesting is the mention regarding an oral form of Copaxone! Interesting...

"Teva Pharmaceuticals has entered an agreement to develop and commercialize a drug called laquinimod, a novel immunomodulatory compound developed by the Swedish company Active Biotech AB...The Swedish company''s immunmomodulator has the potential to be an orally available disease-modifying treatment of multiple sclerosis, Teva explains...

Teva is well-versed in multiple sclerosis, having developed a block-buster drug of its own in Copaxone, the only non-interferon treatment available today. Teva has been working on an oral version but Copaxone is currently administered through injection."

And from a study on laquinimod released this April: "Results from a study of the oral immune-modulating drug laquinimod were presented by Dr. Magnhild Sandberg-Wollheim (Lund, Sweden) on behalf of colleagues in Amsterdam and Sweden...The drug was well tolerated, and those on the higher dose had significantly fewer new active MS brain lesions during the 24 weeks of testing.

Note: With Teva''s recent sponsorship of minocycline (oral antibiotic) and now oral laquinimod, one wonders if they''re feeling a bit nervous about the future of a drug that is given via daily injections...
