 | Research: Study Shows Weight Training Gives MS Patients Physical, Emotional Benefits |
This new study makes common sense, but goes against the typical advice of most doctors. It demonstrates that strength/weight training both physical and psychological benefits for MS patients.
Previously MS'ers have been told to shy away from exercise as they are either considered too fragile, or simply because the increased body heat accompanying physical activity exacerbates MS symptoms. However, the study shows MS'ers are fully capable of pursuing a reasonable training regimine, and as weight training does not raise body temperature, they can expect benefits without symptomatic downsides.
"Lifting weights can improve muscle strength and quality of life for people afflicted with the degenerative disease multiple sclerosis, a new University of Florida study finds.
The study, published in the December issue of the journal Multiple Sclerosis, showed that after eight weeks of supervised resistance training on conventional gym equipment, eight [out of 10] MS patients had stronger muscles, could walk better, and reported less overall fatigue and disability..."
