Erika, was this study blinded?

I do not know. They published only the short abstract and it doesn't say anything about blinded or not blinded.

This study was done in Slovakia. They had 40 MS patients and 40 healthy controls. They used ultrasound (no MR, no venography).
They found 9 healthy controls with reflux and 34 MS patients with reflux.
Conclusion: Venous reflux is significantly higher in patients with MS than in healthy controls.

They made it public here: 24. Czech and Slovak neurological conference in Hradec Kralove (Czech republic) 24.-27. Nov. 2010.

Thanks for posting the abstract of this study. Here is a Google translation...

Incidence of venous reflux in patients with multiple sclerosis - a prospective study

JLF UK and Martinská UN:
1Neurologická Clinic, 2Rádiodiagnostická Clinic

Chronic Cerebral Venous Insufficiency (chvci) is one of the hypotheses explaining the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Incidence of venous reflux in internal jugular vein verified by ultrasound is one of the projected markers chvci. Objective of the study was to verify the incidence of venous reflux in internal jugular vein in patients with multiple sclerosis compared with healthy population. The study included 40 patients with multiple sclerosis and 40 healthy subjects, paired by sex and age. Examination was carried out by ultrasound was studied and the incidence of reflux in internal jugular vein. Results were statistically processed using McNamara's test. In the control group, 9 patients had reflux present, zakial(c(o in patients reflux was present in 34 cases, representing a statistically significant difference (p <0.0001). Comparing the different subtypes multiple sclerosis was found in the RR forms of reflux in 26 patients and 7 controls (p <0.0001) and PP forms in 7 patients and 1 control (p = 0.412). Finally, it can be concluded that patients with multiple sclerosis have a significantly increased incidence of venous reflux compared with the control group.

I am very, very angry

The reason: there has been positive article in a Slovak magazine about CCSVI, about procedures done in Bratislava (Slovakia), about stem cell procedures done in Bratislava. It is out since March 3, 2011.
The magazine puts online many articles but not this one. It is no commercial advertising. It is pure science and help for patients. I have it at home of course but I am not allowed to make any kind of copies.

You can only buy whole magazine online for 0,59 € just one buy one - and this makes me ANGRY!
I must apologize for Slovakia - I am crying right now as I have to write these lines.

I wonder if articles like this are merely social engineering, and the real statement is to the police: if you hear of corruption under say, 500K that is really just business as usual for us, so don't worry about it at that level, ok?

This is from Czech republic. (CCSVI on Czech TV) - made in Czech republic

It was on TV couple of minutes ago: http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/porady/10315080042-tep-24/

If you want to see the video click on "prehrat video"

- google translation at lest of the short text - first part

Dr. Prochazka enters from the left side - interesting.
They do not mention IVUS but as the procedure takes only about 30 minutes I do not think they use it.
They plan to have the first results of the study by the end of this year.

Anyway it is very positive for Slovak and Czech MS patients. We have one study in each small country!
(They started in March 2010 in Slovakia.)

Results from Dr. Prochazka from his CCSVI study in the Czech Republic"
Quote:

good evening
In all patients, performed first noninvasive ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, to enter the study after confirmation of the narrowing of the cervical veins after a detailed explanation of the finding. In a small group of patients no narrowing found .. approximately 5-10% of these are not enrolled. The effectiveness of angioplasty is about 60% of patients after 3 months of follow statistically insignificantly better for the group intervened in the 3 assessment scales FSS, Mfise, MSIs-29. (Placebo?) However, it is necessary to await the results of annual monitoring and analysis of control especially MRI.
