Is it because of TOS????

If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Is it because of TOS????

Postby Taurus » Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:32 am

My right hand started showing signs of heaviness and writing difficulties fifteen years before my diagnosis. During the MS attack in Dec 2008, I experienced heavy itching on the same hand to the point of bleeding due to scratching at night. My right hand feels better once I change my posture. I checked myself for CTS which came negative. The only thing left is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). Anybody who had TOS and got himself checked. At present, my right hand is numb and I cant write also. At present, no lesion in spine and few non active in brain. Please advice.

Hey Taurus,

I sometimes get a similar feeling in my right hand when I am writing and just chalk it up to MS but if you want to do a test at home for TOS try this maneuver out:

THE WHITE HAND SIGN, A NEW SIMPLE MANEUVER USEFUL IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF
THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME

A simple objective test to assess the positional vascular obstruction at the thoracic outlet is the observation of the change of colors of the hands when the patient elevates the hands above the shoulder girdle, with the fingers pointed to the ceiling and the palms facing the observer. The appearance of the paleness, sometimes cadaveric, in one or both hands is called the White Hand Sign.

Of course I am no doctor but I would guess ultimately your best bet is to go to your primary physician and have then determine the cause of your symptoms. Good luck and hang in there!

I got myself checked thru EMG and NCS tests. Surprisingly, one report says it is confirmed TOS on right side with mild CTS also while the other, performed by a neuro says no TOS but the heaviness and numbness/pain in hands could be because of MS lesions (though non active for four years) Further, pain in my right hand in elevation is only in thumb and first three fingers (median nerve involvement which is not usually compressed in TOS) Confused again. Can somebody help me. Its been almost a year and am still searching for a definite answer.
