was on the radio this morning . i hope you can get it.

What is David Agus trying to tell us? The outspoken U.S. oncologist argues that we can bring an end to the illnesses that plague us with regular eat/sleep patterns, a few key pharmaceuticals and a plan to toss out high heels. Dr. David Agus, author of The End of IllnessThe End of Illness explains.

Thanks for posting, erin. Saw him on John Stewart....brilliant. Want to get his book. The most interesting quote (that caught my ear) was when he said that Jonas Salk's discovery and the immunologists that followed him took us on the wrong path in understanding many diseases, because they began to search for the microbe that might cause and the drug that might cure disease, instead of looking at the system of the body. The microcosm rather than the macrocosm. He believes that many diseases will not have cures, but will be more about prevention and mitigation. That cancer is not a noun, you do not have cancer, but a verb....you are cancering. Wonder what he'd think about MS?

just saw an interview with this individual (also on jon stewart). did not find him brilliant per se. in one breath he says good food is a key to preventing illness, in another that inflammation is at the root of illness, and in another the conclusion is to take aspirin daily to mitigate said inflammation.
then he trotted out the vitamin e / prostate cancer study. i ask you... :S
as far as the idea of treating infections with abx vs chronic inflammatory illnesses in complex human systems, i agreed absolutely with his distinction of the two distinct scenarios and the need for different approaches.
i would have to have a thorough read to evaluate overall merit ... but the first impression, so-so.

jimmy--

did some more reading after your post. I only heard that one quote while passing thru room. You're right...he's very negative on supplements, very up on personal DNA testing (he has a financial interest in Navigenics, a company he founded) Never mind...

So you think that the Dr. Salk's discovery of safe and effective vaccines against illness was mistaken and misinformed, cheerleader?

sylar--not the point. Of course I'm thankful for Dr. Salk's work and the work of immunology. Larger point (which was Dr. Agus', not mine) was that microbiology/immunology became the hyperfocus of medicine. Microcosm over macrocosm. But both are important--cell to complete system.
