Hi...My husband is 35 years old and has MS. He is currently going through a relapse and will be out of work for the next 5 weeks or so. And we are moving at the end of this month. He does NOT have any kind of insurance through work and my job offers short term disability to me ONLY. So if he doesn't work for 5 weeks, he does not get paid. Just wondering if anyone out there has privately obtain short term disability such as Aflac (who denied him coverage in the past). Other STD plans I am seeing require you to be out of work 90 days or more. Are there any programs that would help with the cost of living during the time he is out of work?

There is not an insurance company in the world that will give someone diagnosed with MS any disability insurance, be it short or long term.

To answer your other question: I was lucky that at age 26 when I was fresh out of school I bought long term disability. Best choice I ever made.

I didn't think so but I figured it was worth a shot to ask. Unfortunately, my husband didn't buy any before his disgnosis so he's SOL!

we just offered a new type of insurance that our insurance company was selling and by adding this they agreed to re-open our short term and long term to everyone. if you had a pre-existing condition like MS, you would have had to wait a year before you could use it. it was interesting to me...i was surprised they offered it. so, i'm not sure how that helps you, but it is available under certain circumstances.
