In Memory

Post by Moom9335 »

For all of you who followed the blog, Thegreekfromdetroit.com, I would like to have you remember that one year ago, March 3, 2013, George
left this world of suffering. I have written a tribute that describes the man he was before MS.
May all of you find healing, and may a cure be found so that MS will no longer be found in this world.

Moom, thank you for visiting us. Please know that not a day goes by that I don't think of George. I'll always remember how much he loved his family, and there will always be a place for him in my heart. Here's the link to the MS Hug thread I posted in George's honor: http://www.thisisms.com/forum/general-d ... 21937.html

Dear Happy Poet,

I thank you for all the research and the poem for George.
He was born in April, so how apropos.
He, however, did not make it to his 45th birthday.
To add to your information, George never had relief from his spasticity once he had the Baclofen pump
put in his body. The three surgeries (because of catheter slippage) further exacerbated his pain, spasticity and
furthermore, took his legs out completely. It was a true disaster.

When he moved to Florida with us, he could still sit up in a wheelchair. His ability to stay up, however, lessened
quickly as his upper body lost strength. He lay in bed and called every pain specialist in the listings. One by one they refused
to treat him because of "red flags", catheter having pulled out twice. He spent hours on the phone, days waiting for a response and
then rejection.

We had a service that would come to the house to titrate his baclofen. He never achieved pain relief.
Finally, one doctor agreed to treat him. The doctor tried, but nothing, again, relieved his pain.
He finally got to the point that he could no longer sit up at all, his legs were completely paralyzed and his arms were beginning to
weaken. Looking at him, no one could believe what was happening to his body since he was 6ft3", big shoulders and strong looking arms.

No one even suggested lidocane injections or infusions. We heard of a woman in Canada who had the same situation as George, but
her doctors would come to her home, give her monthly lidocane infusions and this allowed her to deal with her spasticity, not cure it.
She also had other support services such as PT (George was refused because treatment would not provide gains).

For a month or so, he was unable to get out of bed, not sit in the wheelchair. When we took him to the doctor or hospital, it was by ambulance....at personal expense.
He was getting ongoing UTI's, MS Hug (what a name) all over, front and back. He was on a huge regimen of oral pain meds. This man never took asprin before unless he had to. He was really suffering. Oh, the best laugh (black humor) of all was when he stayed in the hospital for three weeks after the fourth surgery to replant the pump and catheter, he was told that he had developed a pain "phobia and that was why he reacted as he did during PT and laying in bed. I watched as his huge body, wracked in spasms and pain, was thrust into a shower chair by two nurses who could
barely keep him in the chair for all the spasticity. There is so much more, and it is all awful

I do not know where you are in your pain level or treatment. I hope you have found some relief.

Again, I thank you for remembering him and for the relationship that you shared. I cannot help
but be bitter over the slipshod treatment of MS, the lack of timeliness in treatment, and the lack of advancements for Primary Progressive MS.

Healing to all of you, and since I no longer believe in miracles, hope for a research breakthrough.

Moom, George was extraordinarily blessed to have such a wonderful, loving mother. A caring support system at home is so important, especially when the medical establishment has so many who are greedy, ignorant, and uncaring. Taking care of George and honoring his choice to end his pain must have been so incredibly hard for you all.

Everything that George and you went through was so unfair, but his bravery and strength were such an inspiration to me and gave me the power to try to help others suffering from the MS Hug. You can be very, very proud of George.

Thank you for asking about me and visiting the thread which I'll update again with my latest exacerbation that worsened my MS Hug and gave me a new, very painful symptom not yet listed on the thread--splenic flexure syndrome (large intestine). I can only shake my head and cry when I remember I had naively thought that every possible MS Hug symptom had already been listed.

George's strength is still with me, and for that, I can't thank him enough. Moom, you raised a mighty fine son, mighty fine.

With love,
Pam

HappyPoet,
I am proud and happy that George continues to inspire and encourage.
Believe me, he was just born a good and kind man.
We only gave him love and permission to be who he was.
So sorry, truly, for your hurt and suffering.
