Is this uhthoff's phenomenon?

If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Is this uhthoff's phenomenon?

Post by Chrish1441 »

I've been searching and searching for a long time now to uncover the strange 'episodes' that I have on a daily basis. They are part of the reason I am unemployed and am struggling to function in society.

Any situation that increases my body temperature or makes me hot, even mildly, leads to an instant myriad of symptoms. I've noticed it occurs particularly when getting hot but not sweating. I lose the ability to focus my eyes and my brain starts rapidly slowing down. I sit there staring blankly. I am unable to process even the most basic information and am virtually left disabled. This happens after eating a meal, it happens seconds upon sitting in a hot car, it happens if I have a hot shower, it happens if I have a mild cold.

Upon cooling down the symptoms disappear as fast as they came. Cold showers help further - my aches and pains rapidly reduce too. I feel like a different person stepping out of a cold shower than I was stepping in. However if I run the water too cold I get muscle spasms.

So my question is, does this sound like uhthoff's phenomenon? If so I can probably push my doctor for an MRI scan.

This is what happens to me as well. I was told it is Uhtoff's and that the smallest increase in body temperature can bring it on. It gets so bad at times, I can't gather my thoughts to speak and explain what's going on. Like you said, the only thing that helps is bringing the body temp down ASAP. My legs go so weak that it is hard to stand to get into a cold shower. I'm not sure what good an MRI would do, since it's a temporary situation, unless you haven't yet been diagnosed with MS.

I haven't been diagnosed with MS or anything yet. Been sent to a sleep specialist for my extreme tiredness/sleepiness but I'm starting to realise it's much more likely to be MS.
