Why R most Tysabri-PML cases in europe?

If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Why R most Tysabri-PML cases in europe?

Post by Sandrine »

I'm confused - according to that data...

<shortened url>

... 20,200 people in the US are on Tysabri and 16,900 outside US.

BUT: There are until now 5 PML cases (Tysabri mono therapy)

1 in the US
4 in Europe (out of the 4 there are 3 !! Germans)

What is happening? Better screening for PML risk candidates in the US? Higher JC virus prevalence in europe?

Any comments?

Thank you,
Sandrine

Hi.

Rephrasing could give some clues:

4 CONFIRMED in Europe
1 CONFIRMED in the US

Having the number of confirmation pending cases could shed more light. I don't want to imply that there is some short of conspiracy in the US, but we need to know the different monitoring and confirmation protocols each country has adopted.

On the other hand, it could be just random.

Of course you're right. I forgot the "confirmed"... And I have no ideas about the monitoring of PML or other less severe "side effects" in Europe compared to the US.

Are there any tests done for JC virus in the US? Is there a spinal tap before they start tysabri, do you know? I have no idea how things work in other countries.
