Effect of pioglitazone treatment in a patient with secondary multiple sclerosis

This article tells the story of a person with very progressive MS who became stable (and even better) after taking Pioglitazone.

Questions :
- Are there diabetic MS patients who for the diabetic had to take pioglitazone and felt improvements on the MS as well ?
- Other MS patients already on PIO ? What is the effect ?

Best Regards,
Degerlache

Hi, Degerlache!

The drug you are referring to is a "TZD". If you do a search and/or look back at prior postings of mine, you will see a discussion regarding TZDs and MS. Probably a couple.

Since a TZD is basically a mild "gene therapy", I doubt that you will find too many who have taken it, because it is something fairly new for diabetes itself, and that was the only study known right now for use of it with MS. Since a TZD is so strong, and until more research comes out on it, it is not being prescribed to MSers yet.

You might also want to check out this thread at Thisisms.com: Pioglitazone.

I added the post above in August 2004. Back then a trial had been initiated, involving 30 people and lasting for 18 months, which means we pretty soon should be able to get some results from it.

Despite keeping an eye open for any reports, of Pioglitazone and MS since then, I have no further information for you. :(

Oh, wow! That's great! I'll REALLY be interested in finding out the results from that trial!
