Hi, i am new. Cannot find smart dr to diagnose my symptoms. Once they see u are fat & bipolar they treat u bad. It does not matter if u have brain lesions & cortical dysplasia.they just say u need to see your therapist. It is because you are overweight & bipolar. Humiliation is not the word.drs have no respect for the truly ill. My lady dr said i have seizures cause i am fat & bipolar. I havd probs find a shrink because wont take my insurance. She said there is nothing she nor my neurologist can do for me! Somebody please help me!

Welcome, Angel, to ThisIsMS. We cannot diagnose, of course; but we are glad to share our experiences and our ideas and try to answer to your questions.

I am sad to hear of the reaction you think you have found among doctors because of being overweight and bipolar.

There are MANY different ideas and suspicions about medical conditions here among the members of our community. But in general I think there is agreement that you need to #1 start by finding a compassionate GP or internist who is willing to work with you and is interested in being a "disease detective"– I do not think a neurologist is necessary at the very beginning, #2 establish a baseline with a thorough physical exam including blood tests. There are so many different possibilities to be checked out and eliminated. (My personal recommendation is always that a person request a "fasting blood insulin test" – this is one of the least expensive blood tests available; this is NOT the same as a glucose or blood sugar test; this test has only been available since about 1960; it is NOT routinely done.) Usually, if a person is overweight, it means the insulin level is high – insulin is necessary for fat storage. At this time, there is no medication to reduce the insulin level; it can only be reduced by diet. People who do not produce any insulin in their bodies are very thin.

Thank u elder! I have been through so much pain that i was going to give up. It does not help that my husband is dying. I used to be a special ed tchr.had to give it up 6 years ago after 26 beautiful years. Major depression & seizures took my gift of teaching special children. Then came the diagnoses-hypothyroidism w/cyst.polycystic kidney disease (both kidneys).cortical dysplasia.adenomyosis. 1.5 cm hemagiona on neck/spine.polycystib ovaries-right one removed in 93. Been diabetic for 13 yrs. Headaches alot. Neurologists in past say seizurures are all in my head & go back to my shrink. I wish someone would believe me! It is terrible when no one believes u. i know it appears like you are banging your head for nothing but please don't give up. hopefully soon you will find a wonderful doctor who cares about you and your health issues.
