ALONE AND LIVING WITH SPMS!!

Postby Issy » Mon Nov 01, 2010 11:30 am

[i] :?: HELLO GOLDEN YRS. MSER'S! SOMEONE ONCE SAID THAT "AGE WAS JUST A STATE OF MIND", BUT I DON'T IMAGINE THAT THE AUTHOR OF THAT PHRASE HAD M.S.? I TURNED 50 THIS YEAR AND ANYBODY WHO SAW ME 3YRS. AGO AND THEN SAW ME NOW, WOULD THINK THAT I'VE AGED 20 YRS.!?
OF COURSE THE REALITY OF THAT STATEMENT IS RIDICULOUS BECAUSE I DON'T LEAVE MY HOME VERY OFTEN ANYMORE! I RELY ON A DELIVERY SERVICE TO GET MY GROCERIES AND ANYTHING ELSE I MIGHT NEED. I'VE MANAGED TO ASK THE GARBAGE PICKUP GUY AND THE VILLAGE POST MASTER TO HELP ME WHEN I FEEL I NEED IT? IT'S ALL SO HUMILIATING NOT TO BE ABLE TO WHEEL DOWN THE DRIVEWAY WITH MY WALKER 100 FT. TO DROP OFF MY TRASH OR PICK UP MY MAIL!
I MOVED TO THIS REMOTE VILLAGE 4 YRS.AGO. MY NOW, EX-HUSBAND AND I FOUND THIS DELAPITATED HOUSE ON A WEEKEND GET AWAY. WE BOUGHT IT THINKING THAT WE WOULD FIX IT UP AND USE IT AS A SUMMER HOME. WELL, THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN, BECAUSE WE SPLIT UP A YEAR LATER! SO IN THE SEPERATION AGREEMENT, HE TOOK THE HOUSE IN THE CITY AND I GOT THE "HILLBILLY SHACK". THAT WAS O.K. THOUGH BECAUSE I WAS RELATIVELY HEALTHY AND ENJOYED RENOVATING AND DESIGNING. ALONG WITH THE HOUSE CAME AN UNEXPECTED BUT WELCOME SURPRISE TOO!! IT WAS THE PREVIOUS OWNER'S DOG! HE WAS A BIG, BEAUTIFUL AKITA NAMED "BEAR". THE OWNER HAD GIVEN HIM TO A FARM 3 MILES AWAY, WHICH HE KEPT RUNNING AWAY FROM. THE FARM WOMAN ASKED IF I WANTED TO KEEP HIM, AND I GLADLY OBLIGED HER!!
WE ENJOYED 1 YR. IN MY NEWLY RENOVATED HOME BEFORE THE M.S. STARTED SHOWING ME ITS TRUE ABILITY TO TAKE HOLD AND NOT LET GO! I THEN REALIZED THAT I BEARLY KNEW ANYONE AND MY FAMILY LIVED THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY! SO BEAR (NOW 14) AND I ARE USED TO BEING ALONE BUT IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO TALK WITH A HUMAN ONCE AND A WHILE!!??

Hi Issy, I have just joined this site today and your post caught my eye. I hope you are are doing ok. I was dx with rrms in 2001 which is now spms. I am in a power chair most of the time now. I live in the country with a friend who is absent most of the time. It can get pretty lonely, but i have two mountain bernese dogs, both weighing in at 130lbs each. Needless to say I tend to feel quite safe out here because people tend to back off when they see them. I hope by now you have made friends with people? Out here we have neighbors that will come running if need be. Take Care.
