Gilenya ‘found to have long-term positive effects’

A new study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry has found long-term Gilenya therapy can maintain a low disease activity in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The study, Long-Term (up to 4.5 years) Treatment With Fingolimod (Gilenya) In Multiple Sclerosis: Results From The Extension Of The Randomised TRANSFORMS Study, was conducted by an international team of researchers..... Researchers suggest short transition period between RRMS therapies

A team led by researchers at the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland say they have found a short period of eight to 12 weeks is the optimal timing to be considered when patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) are switched from Tysabri (natalizumab) to Gilenya (fingolimod) therapy.... MS mom needs medicine

Dear all,

First of all I want to express my admiration for your courage in facing MS and your kindness in supporting the patients.

My name is Hadeel and I have created this account on behalf of my mother "Hedaya" who has been diagnosed with MS in 2007.
We are Palestinians from Gaza, but my mother lives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and I am currently studying in Germany.

In July 2014, my father ...

New insights into MS treatment

Data from two Novartis phase III clinical trials show that adding brain shrinkage (brain volume loss) to an existing tool to assess multiple sclerosis activity (m-Rio) will give a more precise prediction of the likelihood of future disability progression.... Read More - http://www.ms-uk.org/gilenya

Gilenya and Airplane travel

Hello all. I am due to start Gilenya at the end of next week. I have been on Copaxone for about 2 years but still seeing a new lesion every few months. Was wondering if anyone has experience traveling on airplanes while on Gilenya. I have to travel internationally every 6-8 weeks (Asia and Latin America) which requires flights of 10-16 hours. I also take a lot of trains so I guess I spend time ...

Peripheral blood T cell dynamics predict relapse in MS patients on Fingolimod

Fingolimod efficiently reduces multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse by inhibiting lymphocyte egress from lymph nodes through down-modulation of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptors. We aimed to clarify the alterations in peripheral blood T cell subsets associated with MS relapse on fingolimod......... Read More - http://www.ms-uk.org/gilenya

may have to start Gilenya

I registered on this forum largely to find people taking Gilenya and ask about how likely side effects to it are. And WHAT they are most likely to be.
personally I am the side effects queen - to almost all pharmaceuticals. my entire ms history is one with a wide trail of discarded meds I could not tolerate. when I can finally manage to find one that I can tolerate and it works too, I ...

Gilenya may be best in MS patients failing initial treatment

Switching multiple sclerosis patients with disease activity despite treatment with a first-line injectable to oral fingolimod (Gilenya) was associated with fewer relapses than switching them to another standard injectable, researchers have found.

In a study, patients on either interferons or glatiramer acetate (Copaxone) who were switched to fingolimod had a significantly lower mean annualized relapse rate than those who changed to another injectable immunomodulator, according to Tomas Kalincik, MD, PhD, of Royal Melbourne Hospital in ...

MS drug Gilenya may increase risk of lymphopenia

Studies in Sweden and Germany indicate that underweight women with multiple sclerosis who take the MS drug Gilenya (fingolimod) seem to be at increased risk for lymphopenia. The drug also poses a risk for patients who have low lymphocyte levels before they start drug treatment.

Lymphopenia (also known as lymphocytopenia) is a condition in which a person has a deficiency (penia) of lymphocytes, which are a subset of white blood cells (leukocytes). Lymphocytes, which can ...
