Discuss Tecfidera (BG-12, dimethyl fumarate) as an oral treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Tecfidera efficacy & potential toxicity

I just finished reading the prescribing information for Tecfidera. Of the two studies cited, one did not show a significant effect on disease progression.

Biogen wrote:Tecfidera had a statistically significant effect on all of the relapse and MRI endpoints described above. There was no statistically significant effect on disability progression. The Tecfidera 240 mg three times daily dose resulted in no additional benefit over the Tecfidera 240 mg twice daily dose.

Tecfidera - a mistake to make it oral?

Wow, maybe the newly released oral MS med Tecfidera (previously BG-12) should have been an injection med instead!! :-D Am anxious to hear how debilitating the nausea, vomiting & diarrhea side effects are. Apparently they're enough for patients to stop the med.

Although an irritable digestive system might be characterized as "minor" and not very life-threatening, dealing with constant and/or severe stomach flu-type symptoms could easily ...

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it approved a new drug from Biogen Idec to control multiple sclerosis in adults with hard-to-treat forms of the disease.

The twice-a-day capsules, called Tecfidera, offer a new option for multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease in which the body attacks its own nervous system. New to ThisIsMS BG12 User

I am a 54 year old female with RRMS. I was dx'd in 2000 but had MS for about 6 years before that. I didn't use any meds until the BG12 trial which I started in January of 2008 for me so I have been on the correct dose since the start. It was measured against a higher dose, placebo and copaxone.

Since it received FDA approval today, I can now gladly answer any questions ...

BG-12 and LDN?

Thoughts? I know that BG-12 is thought to increase Th2 cells thereby balancing out with Th1 cells and I believe I have read that LDN has a similar effect in increasing Th2 cells (please, correct me if I'm wrong, it's a while since I read it).
To me (my unscientific intuitive speculation of course) it seems that these two drugs would have a complimentary, synergistic effect.
I ask because I am currently taking LDN with ...
