It seems like some pretty tame threads are getting locked. Like http://www.thisisms.com/ftopict-17415.html ? Am I missing something?

The locking of those threads does not in any way indicate that the topic is inappropriate. It should only be a temporary issue. They should become unlocked at a future date. Please feel free to continue the discussion in another thread.
