Scared to Death

Postby kevinmankins » Wed Oct 02, 2013 9:23 am

I am a 31 year old, healthy male that exercises regularly. For the past month or so, I have been experiencing things that seemed odd. My feet would randomly get tingly and I also noticed the index finger on both hands started to get numb each day for periods of time. Also, my calf muscles and hamstrings started having moments of cramping/tightness. I decided to ask Dr.Google what he thought and he led me to MS. I never had even thought about it but now it seems to make sense. I have researched and researched and researched to the point that I do not know anymore if I am reading myself into symptoms. For the last couple of days, my vision has seemed to be somewhat blurry in the distance.
I am a regular golfer and in my younger days, made the awful mistake of punching the steering wheel of the golf cart with my right hand. I started thinking that it could be nerve issues related to that but that wouldnt make sense for my left hand or my feet. I have not been diagnosed as diabetic but I do LOVE sweets/carbs and there is a history of diabetes in my family. As far as I know, there is not a history of MS.
This is honestly the most scared I have ever been in my life. I am someone that LOVES regular activity and am hopefully about to become a father. I do not want to lose everything right when I am starting. I am sorry to leave this message as I am sure this is something that is added to this site multiple times a day. I just needed to talk/vent/get opinions. Thanks!

Welcome to this is MS, kevin. We are good listeners when someone just needs to talk/vent.

I doubt very much that "punching the steering wheel of the golf cart" is responsible for any of your symptoms. However, I do think your diet, heavy in carbs, could be contributing, especially with your family history of diabetes. I suggest that you see your GP and request a "fasting blood insulin test" – this is NOT the same as a glucose test which is done to diagnose diabetes. I suspect that you have excess insulin in your bloodstream (the optimal level is 3 UU/ML or lower).

All the best to you.
My hypothesis: excess insulin (hyperinsulinemia) plays a major role in MS, as developed in my initial post: http://www.thisisms.com/forum/general-discussion-f1/topic1878.html "Insulin – Could This Be the Key?"

Hello

I have tones that I could say. But really only two seem to be of aid to you as you dont have a diag.

1)The most important being.... Dont freak your self out.
Now that I have a proper diag of RRMS I can look back and realize how much this would have eased my 1.5 yr diag process. Even with a pr of MRI with progressive lesions there were, in my case, many possibilities that could have been effecting me rather then MS. I wont even mention them as several had made me get sick (very literally) with the thaughts that I may have this or that.
Thats no good for your psychological health in any way you look at it.

2)MS doesnt mean your screwed for physical activity.
I DO have long periods of inactivity due to my MS but it makes my good days (sometimes even months at a time) OHHHHH so much more appreciated.

Just to give you an idea of what i mean.

Im 36 next month and have never driven a car, I climbed mountains, I was an avid cyclist(in lifestyle and hobby), a martial artist, wilderness nut, ex cadet survival instructor. THE LIST GOES ON.

Now that I have MS you know what ones of those I cant do ......

NONE.

I still do them all. Shure they may be a little less frequent or less vigorous but I still do what makes me, ME.

MS sucks thats a fact, but it does NOT mean YOUR way of LIVING is over. It just means you gotta be smarter about it.

Hope it turns out to have been something so mild it goes away and never bug you again. But in the case its MS ..... grit your teeth, get mad, smile at yourself and BE YOURSELF. It will make getting through it so much easier.
