Just wondering if anyone else gets this - for about the last 6 months - about 1 or 2 weeks before menstruating I get really sore hips. My symptoms also seem to get a little worse around this time. My GP did an arthritis test and thank goodness its not that, I also mentioned the soreness to the neuro who said it sounded like it was not MS related. Meanwhile the hip pain around menstruation continues ....... it gets so sore I have to sleep with a pillow underneath me ........... ?

I had a terribly sore right hip for the longest time during/after a relapse four years ago. Never got any answer for what it was caused by either. I had mild foot drop on that side as well so one possibility was that the foot drop was causing me to walk differently and recruiting different muscles...though how exactly that would lead to the pain in the hip, I'm not sure. Best of luck with it. After many months mine went away and has not been back. (cross fingers)

Well, here's what I think I have: My ligaments through my pelvis are naturally a bit loose, between genetics and childbearing. During pregnancy this causes hip and pelvis pain due to the extra weight, etc etc. My first certain symptoms of my neurological problems was feeling 6 months pregnant even though I wasn't (at all). My theory: the right side muscle weakness meant my muscles couldn't do their part to keep the pelvis in its proper position.

What helps:
-PT can put the pelvis back into alignment.
-I've since figured out a bunch of little moves I can do on my own to put it back.
-core exercises to strengthen muscles as much as possible.
-symmetrical living -- good posture, avoid putting weight on one leg, sitting crooked, etc.

--> initially I needed the inflammation to ease up via rest, before I could start the exercises to strengthen.

My neuro symptoms kick up during my period (cramps), and pelvis follows with. If you are dealing with a similar thing, my only guess would be that maybe the ovulation/post-peak hormones are doing something or another.

Hey, by the way -- is this just for a short time, or lasting the whole week or two? If it is a brief period of pain 8-17 days before onset of period, could just be ovulation pain.

Jen, that's useful information, thanks. It took about nine months for my hip pain to clear up. It wasn't constant during that time, but it was present on a daily basis and quite aggravating. Even now it's not 100%...just nowhere near what I was dealing with then.

I did find that chiropractic adjustment worked for it as did a specific yoga/pilates move (twisting crossing legs from a seated position and pulling knee to the chest to "open the hip"). It always came back, but that makes sense if it's related to my right side weakness. I never thought of the pelvis as being implicated or misaligned at all, but that makes sense.

I had the sore hips (and knees too). I had a scan and it wasn't arthritis, my joints were great. It went away when I got my iron levels down with the phlebotomy in January. If you are over storing iron it can cause crystals in the joints. It was at it's worst in bed at night, always waking me up, and when I sat for longer periods I got very stiff, which seemed to work off as I got moving again.

The iron removal made the joints lovely and fluid again, I felt years younger.

thank you for the replies - it only happens the week before and during menstruation ......... I have had a 'google' and came across 'endometriosis' - and hip joint pain can be one of its symptoms .. ?
I did have my iron levels checked recently and the doc said iron was normal, which is interesting because 3 yrs ago I was very very very low in iron, I am a vegan so the normal iron reading came as a surprise ........

No answers, just an experience...A few months ago, I started to get sore knees when I wake up in the middle of the night and walk, and only sometimes. It feels more like a ligament situation. I will now note where in my cycle it appears, thanks to the information found in this thread. I imagine it has to do more with spasticity/activity/lack thereof, in my case.

Referred pain from endometriosis is certainly a possibility, especially given how it correlates with your cycle. Definitely worth investigating.
