Improving Cognitive Function?

Hello everyone,
Newbie here.....
I am currently in my worst relapse (newly diagnosed, I but have ignored my pretty severe MS symptoms for 10 years)

Question:
Up until this last year my symptoms have been more related to sensory/motor. However, this last year I have felt cognitive changes. I feel as if I am slowing down mentally & I am tuning out those around me. I'm not sure if it's a bit of depression or the MS itself. I worked as an ICU nurse prior to this current relapse, but I can not work at the moment. I currently can't even figure out how to do basic things that were previously routine around my home.

Is this a symptom shared by others? Can I get some tips or methods being used successfully to increase alertness & overall cognitive function?

Thanks!
Sarah

Here is some information for you from the NMSS:

www.nationalmssociety.org/download.aspx?id=61

Also I find keeping a notebook handy to write down things at work is really helpful! Good luck! You will learn to adapt.

Thank you!
I just noticed there is a topic going just like this one in the "daily life" section of this website.
I will differ my question to that topic....

I read somewhere once that learning a language will have the brain form new connections and may even encourage an environment which promotes nerve cell growth in general. I don't need any encouragement. I love languages and spend at least half an hour a day teaching myself and I see a tutor once a week. Perhaps think about taking up a new language.

Mental challenges and tests are also supposed to help. I have not actually tried this but https://www.mymsmyway.com/mybraingames/index.php was set up especially for us with MS.

If you don't already play chess you could think about doing so. I have fallen out of the habit of playing chess live with people from all around the world at http://www.chess.com/ . I keep meaning to get back in to it. You are matched with people of your ability whatever your level.
