Vasectomy and MS ? Antibody Problems ?

I have MS and I am thinking of getting a vasectomy.

One thing concerns me however.
"When a man has a vasectomy, his body continues to produce sperm. There is nowhere for this sperm to go and while some of it is reabsorbed, the amount produced can present some problems. In many men, this sperm builds up in the tail of the epididymis (a mushy sperm maturation organ connected to the testes). This leads to leaks in the epididymal lining. Sperm can then leak into areas they were never meant to be, and stimulate a different and stronger antibody response than is normal and seen during puberty.

You see, sperm is highly antigenic, meaning it stimulates a strong immune response. It is recognized by the man’s body as foreign. During puberty, some anti-sperm antibodies develop when the body is first exposed to sperm. Prior to this, the man’s immune system has never “seen” sperm. After puberty, the sperm are protected by a “blood-testes barrier”. When this barrier is broken by vasectomy and sperm are “presented” to the immune system, new anti-sperm antibodies are formed and the previous “normal” immune response becomes abnormal in strength, specific antibody types, and perseverance of response.

Here's my question

Assuming that MS is an auto-immune disease, and assuming my immune symtem cannot produce the antibodies to deal with the sperm, what then ?

Is it safe to have a vasectomy if you have MS ?

Will it work ? Anyone here (guys) who has had vasectomies and have MS and are fine ?

Thanks in advance.

The author of this piece of tripe appears to be a psychiatrist. From the tone of the article I suspect he also wears a tin foil hat.

I have MS. I've had the procedure (about 25 years ago). No problems in all that time.

Hello and thanks for the reply!

I have RRMS, dx in 2007, with symptoms 3-4 yes previous.

It's weird, but I thought with a compromised immune system, I'd have cold and sniffles pretty much all the time. However I tend to get a cold once a year, and perhaps flu every 3-4 years!

MS does not really mean that one's immune system is compromised. More likely, the immune system is chronically activated due to ongoing damage in the central nervous system.

Hi I see that this is an old post but just wanted to follow-up as I have RRMS and am scheduled to get a vasectomy.

HKeller - did you go through with your vasectomy, and did you notice any negative side effects?

Hi,

That "theory" is rubbish. However, you will be given a general anesthetic. Tell the anesthetist that you have MS. There are some drugs we just shouldn't be given such as succinylcholine (they call it sux) and that may be an issue. If the surgeon is aware they can go about it a different way.
