fyi both normal controls and celiac patients experience an increase in serum zinc on a gluten free diet.

gluten requires a lot of zinc to digest. if you ensure optimal zinc (18umol/L is the healthy control average in low gluten societies) you are more likely to be able to handle gluten.

in my case i used to have horrible bloating after eating bread. it was painful. then i discovered my zinc deficiency and corrected it. problem solved, i can enjoy bread now.

huh. As you know (Jimmylegs) we've discussed zinc before. I am taking 18mg of zinc in my supplement. I still have my req for zinc serum count... better go make the appt now. But I will not even try to eat anything gluten to test it that theory... It's that bad for me... esp the migraines. I'd take bloating over a migraine any day.

Thanks for the info!

Wishing you all the best!

HunnyBunny - I've had more than one coeliac test, and they came back negative. The thing that's worrying me the most is that all the organs they've looked at are fine (Apart from small cysts on my liver and kidney, which I've been told are harmless) and my bones are fine, but the only thing that hasn't been looked at yet is my brain. But yeah, I don't know if you can have coeliac and IBS, but I definitely have IBS.

jimmylegs - I'm fine with gluten. No foods start or stop my symptoms, and generally I eat a wide range of foods. Can you suggest some foods high in zinc? I'm going to try and see if I can feel at least a bit better with it.

I've got a bit more to add. First off my symptoms started by being soothed with hot water, and now getting in the shower is horribly painful. Also, I'm not sure if this is relevant, but at 13 years old I was diagnosed with mild autism, but I really don't think I am autistic because of the symptoms I have . I remember reading somewhere the link between autism and autoimmune, but I can't find it again. Do you think that the symptoms of autism can be mistaken and can actually be MS?

@hunny fyi

Hepatic function as estimated from the plasma kinetics of antipyrine has been determined in 32 migraine patients. A high proportion of patients exhibited abnormal plasma half-life and metabolic clearance rates for this drug. The serum levels of copper and zinc were also estimated in these patients; the ratio copper:zinc was uniformly higher than that of controls.

if you have a high copper diet it could be throwing your zinc levels out of whack in spite of your 18 mg supplement. your diet could be creating a higher demand for zinc too, depending. gluten's only one of the many zinc drains you can inflict on your body!

@stephe i had something for you too but don't have time right this second. later!
