Radiologically Isolated Syndrome

Hi All,

Throwing a question for what you would in my situation.

DH diagnosed as RIS, with MS like lesions (almost looking like dawson's fingers) in brain, all other tests inclusing spinal MRI, EEG, LP were negative/normal, no symptoms so far.

We have tried 2 neuros already who wouldn't commit that this is MS and has referred to MS clinic. We don't know if the MS clinic doc will recommend medication or not...the appt is still months away.

But what would you do ? Would you be inclined to treat RIS with medication ? Yes, no, why would you say that ?

Thanks in advance for all your insights.

Hi

Personally if in the same situation I would not take Interferon / Copaxone to treat an asymptomatic condition that may or may not develop into MS in the future.

What I would suggest is your Husband takes a precautionary approach and start taking a high dose of vitamin D - 3-5000iu, Magnesium and zinc to balance, a good intake of omega 3 oils, and in general an anti inflammatory diet

Minimise wheat / sugar / / milk omega 6 intake

Moderate red meat intake

Lots of brassicas, leafy greens, fish, poultry, walnuts, grapes

Plenty of info here - see Jimmylegs posts on diet which are very informative.

I second mrbarlow's comments/advice. I would also like to suggest r-lipoic acid, green tea, and turmeric to the list of supplements to consider.

In addition, I think it's important to get some blood tests done before you begin supplementing so that you have a known baseline that you're starting from. Consider getting tests for vitamin-D3, zinc, and magnesium to start with. Jimmylegs may have some other suggestions as well.

at this stage i feel like zinc and magnesium are the big ones, whereas you want d3, b12, and uric acid baseline #s for slightly different reasons. also vitamin e, selenium, PUFA, albumin, ferritin, vit b1, can't hurt to know those levels.

for me i threw everything in willy nilly as soon as i understood there might be a benefit. there was, but now i can't identify which element or elements really did the trick.

i would love it if ms attacks were not so nasty and ppl could just rationally run all the tests, fix one thing, then run all the tests again, see what changed, pick the next thing to fix, test everything again, see what changed, etc.

i need a genie in a bottle to set me up jimmylabs

Thanks All

Thanks all for the reply, He was tested for Vit D and Vit B12

Both were on the low normal side. So we started on supplementing Vit D and Vit B12, I will look into the magnesium and Zinc levels. Our PCP is pretty friendly and can order the tests if we explain him what we are looking for and if he finds the reasoning rational.
