Hi All,

Ive just joined..so hello !!. I was diagnosed with RR MS just under a year ago, at the age of 38. Ive worn glasses for years ( mainly due to having astigmatism in both eyes ). I have just had a appointment with with the eye surgery place ( name witheld )...who say that Im a good candidate to have it done and have given me the green light... Ive booked in to have it done in 2 weeks ( mid Nov 2011 )... However due to having MS, I need to get my Neurologist to give me his consent first.

I havent had any eye sight issues with my MS at all..only normally suffering with hands and feet. Although I do suffer with the odd migraine..

Im going to call the hospital in the morning to see if he will do this..If i cant get hold of him I'll try my MS nurse.

I was just wondering if anyone else with MS has has successful Wavefront eye surgery ?. If so, was getting medical consent an issue ?....

Thanks..

Hello and welcome kneedown!
I had PRK laser on my eyes a few months ago. Like yourself I'd a history of migraine as well as MS, and I also have had bouts of optic neuritis during the last 15 years. This didn't rule me out for PRK and it has been successful. The opthalmologist I went to did not request permission from my neuro - but I'm in Ireland so things probably differ from clinic to clinic. I didn't go to a laser eye clinic, rather to a private opthalmologist, one of the best in Dublin so as to ensure the most thorough analysis of my suitability for the procedure. He did send me for a colour test and a vision-field test prior to the surgery though.
It was successful, I'm glasses-free now, one less thing to think about! I have the occasional day of dry eyes but my eyes were a bit dry anyway. I am a bit light-sensitive but I don't mind that too much and it is very slowly improving.
Hope that helps and let us know how you get on.
WW

Hi & thanks,

My neurologist seems to have washed his hands of this.... by referring this back to the opthamology department. They dont seem to want to get involved ( even though they've done all their tests and they are happy, so much so theyve discharged me ) so Ive had to approach my doctor instead... I should get an answer tomorrow.. Seems everybody just wants to cover their backsides !!

I had LASIK 5 years ago and even with my history of optic neuritis there was little concern for having the procedure. Still to my knowledge there is no contraindication to LASIK with a diagnosis of ms in the literature. I think your doc was being very cautious...that is a good trait in a surgeon IMO.
