Hi.... I came across this question on another site and wondered if anyone here had any idea's on the subject....

"Does anybody know if it's possible for Multiple Sclerosis to burn itself out?"

Any input would be very much appreciated....

On the NMSS website I remember seeing a reference to MS burning itself out after 20 years (but I can't find it now). Of course the timeframes are likely to vary.

On the MSIF site they profile individuals and I recall several saying that they has SPMS but had not deteriorated in the last eight years (after having the disease for c.20 years).

There are some theories that a virus might trigger MS or keep it going e.g. a virus in the CNS. It is possible that the virus (or bacteria such as CPN) might fizzle out and the disease process stop?

I hope this helps. Knowing MS, it won't be the same for everyone. I've also read that the RR stage (before converting to SP) can be betwen 2 and 33 years!

"Burns out" is an emotive term. It implies that MS has gone for good and only the effects remain. It's fairly impossible to prove that one way or another.

It is known that all forms of MS can stabilize indefinitely, which I suppose is equivalent to 'burning out' but without the implication of permanence.

The progression or worsening usually occurs slowly over months or years. All forms of MS may stabilize at any time.

I don't know who came up with this myth, but my MS has only gotten worse for the past three decades, although slowly, and I see no indication of "Burn Out" or stoppage of the disease.

My symptoms got much worse after 20 years, not better.
