Lumbar puncture tests?

Hi,

I'm 28, I've had MS for nearly three years but no spinal tap. I've had some troubling progression and finally decided it would be a useful tool to make sure I was not misdiagnosed. I want to make sure I'm getting all the proper analysis of my fluid while they have it, so I don't have to go through the procedure again. Here's some tests I was thinking of asking the doc for:

IGg synthetic rate- Is this the same as the immunoglobin/Oligoclonal banding?
Immunoglobin testing
Oligoclonal banding
Myelin basic protein
Lactate- Wikipedia says levels can be elevated in MS
Treponemal titers-Wikipedia says this can be useful in diagnosing lyme(be nice to look int this)
Any additional tests you all can think of for Lyme disease or any other potentially confounding diseases?

thank you very much

you could make sure they rule out vitamin b12 deficiency, and you could ask them to look at nutrients known to be low in ms patients. *serum* zinc, magnesium and 25(OH)vitd3 would be useful.

Thanks jimmylegs. I'll request those serum tests be done as well...

I liked your post on orthomolecular therapy. I'm also interested in honing in on a well tuned supplement regime. Also, I'm testing the Wahl/paleo diet.

I currently take Fish oil, Vitamin D3, B12, and Calcium/Magnesium, + probiotic. I had a few questions as well....

What is your daily zinc intake to reach your current target of 18um/L?

I'm curious why the vitamin E and Selenium? Also, I read you take a multimineral, is that a typical multivitamin?

Thanks alot

hi there, sounds good. see if you can get your own copy of the results. the docs will just tell you everything's 'normal' as if that is supposed to be good enough!

glad you liked the ortho stuff :) if you like, fire a 3 day diet diary past me - i can make sure you're hitting all the right nutrients with your wahls/paleo approach.

i take 50mg zinc citrate (balanced with 2mg copper, to prevent copper depletion). (CORRECTION: it is likely to take far more elemental zinc than what's contained in 50mg zn citrate, to make a dent in copper status. measure both, and dose elemental zinc intake accordingly. as always, healthy food first, supplements as needed based on lab results)

that provides 15mg elemental zinc. you can take up to 2 a day of those. i usually just do one. if you're low, you should take two a day until you're up in the top of the normal range. then drop back to one.

selenium has also been shown to be low in ms. good antioxidant too. it's also a sweet antiviral

as for vitamin e, that is a throwback to the klenner protocol for ms. here's what that protocol has to say about vitamin e:
"Complex biochemical changes in the muscle tissue in chronic vitamin E deficiency are followed by histalogical lesions characteristic of muscular dystrophy. Deficiency has also been shown to produce demyelinization and distortion of the axon pattern in the spinal cord, giving rise to hypalgesia and progressive paresis. Fatal massive liver necrosis occurs in animals maintained on diets low in vitamin E and sulfur-containing amino acids..."

i take a multivitamin/multimineral pill. it's one you're supposed to take three times a day, with meals. it's not your standard 'one-a-day' kind of thing. mine's a high potency product.

hope that helps!
