Problems Healing Scars, Surgeries, etc. With MS?

My mom had a cyst removed from her leg over a year ago, and today while we were in the car I saw the incision. The cut is deep, grayish with a little bit of pink around the edges. She said that it hurts every now and then if she hits it or shaves near it. It's on the side of her leg, a few inches below her hipbone. She also said that the stitches she had to have to close the incision never disintegrated like they were supposed to. The doctor had to cut them out.

I know she gives her shots in her butt most of the time [Betaseron every other day] because everywhere else hurts her so much now.

Does anyone else have any problems with healing from things like this when they have MS? I know she's worried about it, so I thought I'd ask so maybe I can give her a little bit of comfort!

I was on Avonex for 10 years. I noticed that I had slow wound healing. For example, one time I fell and banged my shin on a parking lot curb and it took months to heal. Since I was progressing anyway and I felt that Avonex was causing me some long term problems, I stopped taking it about 2 years ago. I find that cuts heal better now. Your Mom may benefit from going to a wound healing clinic. Of course, Jimmylegs might say that impaired wound healing is a sign of zinc deficiency. Your Mom could get her serum zinc levels tested. Around 18 µmol/L is thought to be optimal. You might also want to consider getting her vitamin D level tested as well as some others while she's at it.

yep! i'd be looking really hard at zinc, and probably looking up whether avonex is known to have any effect on zinc status too.

My husband needs 2 hip replacements (one much worse than the other) and his interview with the surgeon went like this...What is your pain level and can you tolerate it? Since he is on 2 Alieve's daily & no DMDs, the Dr wants him to delay his surgury for as long as he can stand the pain. He says it could possibly activate an MS attack. Since he has PP I am a little concerned...however wouldn't the Op be helpful to his walking? He is 62 and his walking abiity is his main issue to date following his CCSVI treatment in 2010. Please, I could use some advice on those who have dealt with this or have some general knowledge in this area. Thank you

Along with Zinc that Jimmy mentioned you may try proteolytic enzymes mainly serrapeptase for it's healing power not to mention the beneficial effects it has on MS!
