What diagnostics / blood work can i request to find out ...

... any underlying conditions i have, besides MS.

As i have tried so many MS treatments like CCSVI, HBOT, Wahls diet, Upper cervica chiropractic , which all seem to make me worse!
i want to know whats going on in my body,
the fact the wahls diet is making me worse, when i have been on LDN for 4 years which stopped the progression, well until i started the wahls diet 4 months ago!

it took several months for the neurologist to reach my MS diagnosis, but that was 10 years ago so didnt question it,
they took MRI scans (brain and lower spine lesions shown), blood work and lumber puncture/ spinal tab (, so will never know why it took so long to diagnose me,
he only gave me an answer because i pestered him for one.

So i am due to see my GP tomorrow and want to be armed with some diagnostics/blood work they can do to give me some answers,
i feel i must be intolerant/sensitive to the wahls diet foods, but not sure how accurate food intolerance igG antibody tests like this one is:
http://www.foodintoleranceuk.com/food_i ... e_test.htm

I was thinking maybe coeliacs but i dont have any digestion symptoms,

any ideas on the diagnostics/blood work i can request /suggest tomorrow?

hi there :) i, for one, really want to know your zinc status! amongst the other things known to be poor in ms patients. at least to definitively rule out a nutritional component, if nothing else!

This will surprise NO ONE:

I suggest that you request a "fasting blood insulin test."

Lyndacarol, unfortunately i have already been to the Drs so didnt ask, what would this fasting blood insulin level show that could find answers to my problems?

JL, finally i have had my bloods drawn,
the dr authorised serum zinc, copper, magnesium, and done a 'Bone Profile Serum' as he said this is more accurate than the serum calcium as calcium leaches to the bone so would give a clearer reading,

i told him how im questioning my MS diagnosis and feel it might be something else so was referred to a new neurologist and he done the 'Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate' - i dont remember his rationale, but it measures inflammation,

He Also done a 'IgE Serum' - for food sensitivities/intolerance
and Coeliac screen
what do you think off these tests?

should i go back on all my supplements now = Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Fish oil, Selenium, Vit B50, C, D3, E

- i showed him my pressure sore, and guess what, he thinks it could be a pilonidol sinus due to its location - coccyx,
typical eh,
but the doctor before him acually performs surgery on pilonidol sinus' and he thought it was a pressure sore, so i guess i value his view more over a general practitioner - nonetheless the GP said to ask the neurologist when i see him his view on the ulcer/sinus , and to check whether it could be making my MS symptoms worse,
as the GP seemed to believe the location of the sore wouldnt have an effect on my MS Symptoms

again, thanks JL

heya, that's pretty good!

the bone profile - was that calcium, phosphate, albumin, and ALP?

it'll be interesting to see the ESR result
http://labtestsonline.org/understanding ... r/tab/test
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is an easy, inexpensive, nonspecific test that has been used for many years to help detect conditions associated with acute and chronic inflammation, including infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases. ESR is said to be nonspecific because increased results do not tell the doctor exactly where the inflammation is in the body or what is causing it, and also because it can be affected by other conditions besides inflammation. For this reason, the ESR is typically used in conjunction with other tests.
ESR is helpful in diagnosing two specific inflammatory diseases, temporal arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica. A high ESR is one of the main test results used to support the diagnosis. It is also used to monitor disease activity and response to therapy in both of these diseases.
ESR will indicate if your blood is hypercoagulable. interestingly, some of the old klenner nutrients recommended for MS are about increasing blood flow. vitamin e and niacin are notable components associated with blood flow that are included in the klenner protocol. although i never had ESR done myself, it makes sense since i got the most subjective improvement from the modified oral version of the klenner protocol that i used in 2006 (goodbye, sensory ataxia!). also, i decided to use ginkgo biloba on a short term basis to increase blood flow, thereby increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissue. it was AMAZING. i had had no idea how poorly my brain had been functioning. on the other hand, it took correction of zinc deficiency to get my cognitive function all the way back to subjective normal. interestingly zinc and ESR are negatively correlated, ie low zinc correlates with elevated ESR. also interestingly, i recently learned that vitamin e is protective against zinc deficiency. so they're both useful.

the IgE will be interesting too. another link to zinc status.

Zinc supplementation alters airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness to a common allergen
http://www.journal-inflammation.com/content/8/1/36/

Zinc and copper status in children with bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2134100

Acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption and food allergy
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15801253
Two infants with AE, diarrhea, and low serum zinc levels were evaluated. Food allergy was found in both infants. The first infant had a serum IgE level of 4642 IU/mL... The second infant had a serum IgE level of 991 IU/mL

in that last study they did not correct zinc status and measure whether food allergy markers changed. instead the conclusion was that allergy can cause zinc deficiency. possibly true, but still a fail, given abstract 1 above :(

You might consider seeing a holistic doctor. They will try and find out what in your enviroment is causing your illness.

Want2hike,

I intend in the near future to see a Functional Medicine Practitioner , are they the same as the hollistic drs you talk of?

JL,

I dont know any more about the bone profile besides the title, but results should be available in 7 days from today, same with the other tests

That ESR test does seem useful, lets hope it gives me some answers

From the info you've shared, Zinc does seem to be very important in MS patients.
On that note, i need to get back on the supplements as im off been off them for 5days for the test,
which do you recommend between Zinc Glyconate 50mg OR Zinc Picolinate 50mg, every morning?

I edited my post after you had replied, so any thoughts on the following JL:

"
- i showed him my pressure sore, and guess what, he thinks it could be a pilonidol sinus due to its location - coccyx,
typical eh,
but the doctor before him actually performs surgery on pilonidal sinus' and he thought it was a pressure sore, (as according to him it didnt look like a sinus)
so i guess i value his view more over a general practitioner - nonetheless the GP said to ask the neurologist when i see him his view on the ulcer/sinus , and to check with him whether it could be making my MS symptoms worse, and the neuro can them refer me.
as the GP seemed to believe the location of the sore (coccyx) wouldnt have an effect on my MS Symptoms
"
as i suggested 'could my worsening MS symptoms be down to tis ulcer or sinus, whatever one it is.

looking forward to seeing those results :)

re comparison to vs zinc picolinate - do you mean zinc GLUconate or zinc glyCINate?

there's an older study out there that i've referenced elsewhere, which suggests that the picolinate form is better absorbed than the gluconate or citrate forms.

zinc glycinate is supposed to be better than picolinate, which is better than zinc oxide, which is better than zinc gluconate, according to a more recent 2008 study.

so. either way, you should be fine alternating one of each each day until they're gone, and then when you buy more look for zinc glycinate.

as for that pesky pressure sore/sinus. i'm just recently delving into the links between zinc and vitamin E. remind me what your diet and supplement regimen have been like for vit e over the last while?

I think that excess insulin, which is more than 3 UU/ML found in the fasting blood insulin test, is responsible for MANY of our symptoms.

Insulin is a very strong irritant and damages the inside of our blood vessels. I think this is responsible for the burning or paresthesia I feel in my legs and feet.

I think insulin affects the intestines (constipation) and urinary bladder (urine retention and incontinence) by thickening and stiffening the smooth muscles around those body parts.

I think insulin in the small intestine (it is dumped in in the duodenum) damages the villi and hinders the absorption of nutrients from our food.

Insulin can cross the blood brain barrier and affect the blood vessels in the brain.

Insulin promotes the clotting of blood and in excess causes cells to be insulin resistant, and leads to insulin resistance in the skeletal muscles (probably affecting walking and other movement).

A Harvard researcher, Dennis J Selkoe, has implicated insulin even in Alzheimer's disease.

It has also been implicated in high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, and type II diabetes.

Lyndacarol,

I have constipation, bladder symptoms so maybe i shoud of got that fasting insulin test,
but say it shows positive, what treatment options are there and how successful are they?

i questioned whether i have a problem with absorbing nutrients due to the weight loss ive had since aged 14-15, which unexpectedly occurred and has remained
my dr took bloods for a Celiacs screen

JL
yes i mean zinc glyconate,
but as the studies say its that poor, i'll stick to zinc picolinate then when im running low look for some zinc glycinate,

I follow the wahls diet strictly and the supplements i take daily are :

With Breakfast = Zinc picolinate 50mg

In between breakfast & lunch on empty stomach= Klamath bluegreen algae

With lunch = Calcium citrate 250mg- Vitamin B50, D3 5000IU, Fish oil 1000mg

With dinner = Magnesium glycinate 250mg, Fish oil 1000mg, Selenium 200mcg with vit A-C-E - Copper 2mg - Vit C 1000mg - Ocean kelp 300mg, Vit E8 Complex 400iu

thank you

heya!
sorry :S i have no idea re absorption of zinc glyconate, it could be awesome... i haven't really seen anything written about it at all, much less comparisons to other forms.

i just have read studies where zinc gluconate is less well absorbed compared to oxide or picolinate or glycinate.

thx for the regimen info. re
remind me what your diet and supplement regimen have been like for vit e over the last while?
i'm curious very specifically what form of vitamin e is in there with your selenium? and also as an aside, have you ever looked at a multi to cover off your trace micronutrients?

Sure,
i take this carlson labs E8 complex
http://www.iherb.com/Carlson-Labs-E-Gem ... Gels/12908

, but i will soon be running out and is too expensive so will use this natural vit e 400iu
http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... 623&cid=69

is there any other flaws in my supplement regimen?

ok good. when does the e8 go in typically?

hmmm that holland and barrett one is not good enough at first glance. only has four mixed tocopherols and no tocotrienols, right?

you'd be better off maximizing dietary vit e if possible. 1/4c raw sunflower seeds per day will get you a good chunk of the way there. if you can commit to that intake...

once the bloodwork is in we'll know if there's more tweaking to be done :) - for a few things anyway!

let's see what the bloodwork tells us before we try to figure out much more tweaking :) fyi i'm gung ho about AOR ortho core multi right now. it has the right vit E8 complex and the right b12, i am easing out of some extra supplements i used to have to buy, but now i can just take this multi. slowly reducing # of pills per day. yay!
