Hi all, is there anyone out there who is on hookworms or whipworms either as part of a trial or on their own, who could give an update of how they are doing on them? Have they slowed the progression? How many do you have in you? Etc...?

I'm really interested in this treatment!!

Im having hookworm treatment with AIT. ALL going well.

Brief Summary. Had an attack of acute optic neuritis in Nov 2010 which had been preceeded by several months of on and off tingling in the feet. Was on Interferon until APril 2012. Started HW therapy Feb 2011 with 3 top ups since then.

At present symptoms limited to occasional buzzing in feet when they get hot and slight blurring in eye. Living a near normal life - full time job, doing a masters degree, generally fit and well.

I'm sorry, can i ask u again? What do u do with the intestinal worms? Do u plant it in ur intestine or do u eliminate it from ur intestine? or something else?

Here, in Indonesia, there's a treatment with leeches, they suck ur blood n make ur blood circulation become better through the anticoagulation substances the leeches produce n bring into ur blood circulation. There's a pwMS here who gave the treatment a try n he said his symptoms become better. I don't know the details of his treatment though n his complete success story.

Thank u.

In natural conditions hookworm larvae normally enter the body via the feet, travel to the lungs, travel up in mucus and then down into the stomach. They then develop into adult worms in about 3 weeks.

The artifical process;

You are supplied with a vial with a fixed number of hookworm larvae. These are microscopic. You pour the solution onto a large plaster gauze. The gauze is then applied to the arm. The larvae burrow through the skin and get into the blood stream - this is harmless as they are too small to cause obstructions.

Once there you leave them to do their work dampening down your immune system in return for a small quantity of blood.

Other than the reaction site on my skin I havent had any significant symptoms - perhaps some transient discomfort and slight feeling of nausea 2-3 weeks into being innoculated.

MrBarlow: that's very interesting, although obviously not clinically verifiable data on whether they are the things causing the stability of your condition, but it looks good.

I think there is a study in the UK about hookworms, does anyone know how that's going?

Can anyone explain what the scientific theory is behind this? Why this would have an effect on MS?

The decreasing incidence of infectious diseases
Public health measures were taken after the industrial revolution by western countries to limit the spread of infections. These measures comprised decontamination of the water supply, pasteurization and sterilization of milk and other food products, respect of the cold chain procedure, vaccination against common childhood infections and the wide use of antibiotics. The decline is particularly clear for hepatitis A (HAV), childhood diarrhoea and perhaps even more spectacular for parasitic diseases such as filariasis, onchocercosis, schistosomiasis or other soil-transmitted helminthiasis [13]. In countries where good health standards do not exist, people are chronically infected by those various pathogens. In those countries, the prevalence of allergic diseases remains low. Interestingly, several countries that have eradicated those common infections see the emergence of allergic and autoimmune diseases.
Thank u cervocuit. Ur information helps me to answer my question about why here in Indonesia which most people are lack of hygiene awareness, but they don't develop MS. Could it be the parasite (i don't know whether it's good or bad) have a beneficial effect in reducing the development of autoimmune dieases, such as MS.

U know what? maybe i, compare to other people here in my country, am one of the most hygiene person. I only eat dishes that my mom prepared, i seldom eat outside like in a restaurant or on the streets (before i got diagnosed with MS). I always wash my hands before i eat, still doing it until now. I'm really a hygiene freak u know..hahaha

Thank u mrbarlow for ur information too.
