Electrolyte imbalance: how to correct different profiles

After taking a ride on the low bp bus, it finally occurred to me that the same treatment is NOT going to work for all of us and we don't all have the same electrolyte imbalances. I believe we all likely have some sort of imbalance though. And I believe the imbalance is what causes our lesions and discomforts (some which I know can be completely alleviated just by correcting our imbalances). Think Na, K, Mg, Ca, Cl, P http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... 002350.htm

When studies were done to examine hpa-axis activity in people with MS, I believe they focused primarily on cortisol and ignored it's ugly stepsister, aldosterone. So, while we all may have loads of cortisol coursing through our veins, some of us might produce insufficient amounts of aldosterone and therefore have a different electrolyte profile. Imbalances may be driven by completely different hormone irregularities as well.

I'm going to babble on about this concept (if I can find anything to back it up) and hope that Jimmylegs and Scott1 (and anyone else interested) will join me in this exploration.

For now, I post nothing of substance because my pack/herd/harem/flock/riot of boys is quite hungry for my attention today. If you've any thoughts on this, please do jump right in and post. :)

Did you hear the gears grinding to a complete halt? There are a HUGE number of factors that play into electrolyte balance. It's far too complicated to even attempt to attack without test results of one's electrolytes and depending on those results, tests of related endocrine levels.

Zinc is an electrolyte?? Who knew?

Jimmy, you've got a full history of lab tests on your electrolytes (lucky dog). What were your levels at the beginning of your experiment and what are they now?

I think I'm going to have my electrolytes tested in April and then possibly start working with an endocrinologist. I may have by dumb luck hit one of my electrolyte issues with the clonidine but that doesn't mean there aren't more issues to be addressed.

just don't omit it from consideration :)

as for my levels tests, magnesium used to be in the 0.80s after ages supplementing but not doing it properly, and overdoing vit d3 probably drove it down so much i'd be scared to see what it was - but i didn't have it tested at that particular time. since correcting the problems, i can get my level up to 0.94 mmol/L and feel good.

zinc started at 8.6 umol/L, deficient by any standard, and i've had it up into the 20.0 umol/l range since.

wasn't lucky at all - just determined to know what was up!

What do MS and snake bites have in common? Fun and educational!

Kinda random...kinda related.
