Marijuana contains both THCs (psychoactive component) and CBDs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabidiol).

This science daily article suggests low dose THCs may protect against hypoxia related brain damage.

This is good news if you live in a state where medical use of cannabis is allowed.

Since MJ can be produced in a purely medicinal non-psychotropic variety, there should be nothing stopping it's widespread use!
