Tired after exercising...fatigue?

My whole life I have heard things like: "I get so much energy after I exercise" or, "I can't exercise at night because then I can't sleep (I have so much energy)." before I was diagnosed I never felt that way, in fact the complete opposite was true-- exercise relaxed me, so I've always preferred exercising in the evening.

Since I have been training for waves to wine I have noticed that now after a ride or spin class I'm just plain wiped out. I always assumed that feeling relaxed after a work out was just a personal variant, but a benefit of exercise nonetheless.

Maybe this is a silly question, but I wonder if I'm experiencing fatigue? It seems obvious but I guess I'm just not sure what is normal to feel after a workout, seems like my response has always differed from the norm.

Thoughts? How can I tell the difference?

Sustained duration type exercise, i.e., endurance, tends to wipe people out. If you were, on the other hand, to do a low-repetition, high-exertion strength training, then that would act more like a tonic.

I was out exercising today and I remember feeling really spacey at the end - but in a relaxed way. It wasn't bad!

I've read that our muscles have to work harder to perform the same task as someone without ms. And of course the heat can bring back old symptoms and cause serious fatigue. Lot's to consider!

On another note, I ran the bay to breakers when I lived in SF for a year. Waves to wine, is that the new name? :) Whatever it is, good luck! :)

Waves to Wine is a Bike MS event from San Francisco to Sonoma County.

For me there was a drastic change from feeling exhausted and not good after exercising, to now feeling energized after exercising. So I think I've been on both sides of that coin.

After riding or spinning, are you overheated? It could be bringing out MS symptoms such as fatigue. Ice water and air conditioning?

Cece,

I don't feel especially overheated but i guess it's possible. i just feel like i should have a better understanding of what is normal to feel after a workout and what is not. it seems like its normal to feel either energized or relaxed but yawning and feeling too tired to move might not be (which is how i feel most of the time).

if it's the case that feeling so tired after a work out is abnormal then do i continue pushing myself and wait for my energy level to catch up? or do i back off? if i back off there is a very good chance i will not make my goal of training for the the full century (100 miles) ride which would be upsetting...to say the least.

I now take creatine daily for greater strength and endurance. I got the idea from Terry Wahls' book. You have to be careful to drink more water with it. I am much more tired after less effort if I don't take it. I'm not training for anything, just getting through the work day. Without the creatine I spend a lot of time collapsed in bed waiting to recover from whatever effort. With it, I'm not 'normal' but I do more and feel less of the drained feeling.

My very rough understanding of the mechanism is that it works to replenish ATP and help our overburdened mitochondria. I'm not suggesting it's for everyone, but especially since you're training for an athletic event you might want to research it and see what you think.

After a good workout, my muscles can feel tired and looser or relaxed but my brain is energized and I'm more likely to jump up and do something, even something that seemed like too much prior to exercising. I'm not exercising to exhaustion though.

When I was on the flip side and more exhausted after exercising, I could be wiped out by a short workout, and not feel well afterwards. There was no feeling of being energized. I would feel worse than before I started. I could however strength train and feel ok afterwards.

I haven't tried creatine, but I will look that up.
