why do some drugs get pulled off the market after a few die (ex. prepulsid) and others kill many more and keep killing but stay on?

The drug companies will keep the drugs on the market as long as the FDA let them. The drug companies objective is to make as much money as they can. They are not interested in how many the kill. It is all up to the FDA to determine how many people they let the drugs kill. The FDA is loaded with these drug company executives. The drug companies are determining how many they are allowed to kill.

The simple (and more reasonable) answer: The FDA assesses the risk versus the benefits of a given treatment (in this case, prepulsid/cisapride) for a given illness(heartburn). The FDA also considers if there are more safer AND effective treatments available for that illness.

According to this article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1173548/, the side effects of this heartburn treatment include dangerous heart arrhythmias that may be fatal. Coupled with the fact that there are "countless medications" for heartburn that are safer and effective, the FDA (who "black box"-ed the drug when it first came out) has told gastroenterologists to use prepulsid/cisapride only as a drug of last resort.

You have to look at just more than the number of people who died from the side effects of a treatment. Given that heartburn is, for most, only a minor inconvenience that is easily remedied by reducing acid levels in the stomach, 70 deaths is high price to pay for heartburn relief.

no one should be taking anything to reduce stomach acid at all, let alone if it's going to kill you. the acid levels in GERD aren't the fundamental problem, just a misguided treatment focus. the actual issue is the LES dysfunction.. researchers are starting to get around to this idea now.

It has nothing to do with risk vs benefits. It is all about the money with these jokers. If they were really concerned with our health they would not force the therapy's which worked to go to Mexico. The drug companies place their people in the FDA and they get what the want. It is the same with Monsanto and the GMO's. It is only about making money for these companies and if you listen to them you will stay sick. Illness is big business in our country. If anything they were doing was good for our health we would not be seeing all the sick people today.
