Very interesting. The article begs the question, though: If a healthy BBB keeps insulin out, would allowing insulin in be profitable. Perhaps the damage done to the BBB's of those with MS already allows in unrequired insulin. A ketogenic diet, providing ketones as an alternate fuel for the brain, would make the matter of glucose uptake moot. In any event, the concept that substances can be delivered intranasally is both scary (pathogens) and exciting (cures). As a side note, it's bothersome how, if something isn't financially profitable, it isn't worth doing. (Big Pharma's mission statement, I believe.)

Interesting article, CaliReader.
But I have a few things to add: insulin does cross the blood-brain barrier; in fact, some insulin is actually secreted in the brain (although the bulk of it is made in the pancreas).

As grandsons4 pointed out, ketones are an alternate fuel for the brain; in fact, I have read they are the preferred form of fuel (preferred over glucose).

But my greatest concern comes from research finding that amyloid-beta (implicated as a possible cause in Alzheimer's), as well as insulin, is broken down by the Insulin-Degrading Enzyme (IDE); however, INSULIN is the preferential (first) target of IDE. If excess insulin requires all the IDE, amyloid-beta is left to accumulate in the brain. I fear that adding more insulin to the brain may result in MORE cases of Alzheimer's!

Hi LindaCaroll,

I have no opinion about the insulin treatment. My thoughts were more aligned with Grandsons4's second set of observations. I was mostly concerned with the possibility that the nasal method might lead to more, possibly better treatments for us. I think the technology is cool/ interesting, and it's nice to see advances reported in despite of big pharma priorities re quick profit.

I didn't work today. Spent the day instead on a nutrition blog that made me think of you and your ideas and advice.

I hope we all can find ways to feel better. Speaking of which, either Gilenya, or my own disease process has me feeling on top of the world.
It's great to have a little energy for a change.

Best to all.
