My brother was diagnosed with MS back in 1991. He has been fortunate for many years but recently started having trouble with motor skills and thinking processes. Doctor placed him on Aricept about three months ago. He has now become very paranoid, imagining his wife is running around on him all of the time and one night he even thought the FBI was flying over their house. Has anyone else had any experience with Aricept in the treatment of MS? He and his wife have an appt. next week with the neurologist about the increase in paranoia. He realizes he is doing it but can't get it under control.

Paranoia is listed as one of the side effects of Aricept. Aricept is currently indicated for Alzheimer's.

Aricept is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It inhibits the acetylcholinesterase enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine. I am presently discussing the reason for the low levels of acetylcholine in Alzheimer's and MS under the thread "Some Interesting Connections."
