Some good news....

Just wanted to share some good news. I was diagnosed in 95 because of a foot that dropped when I walked over a mile's distance. Since then I've tried the Avonex(that was a whole new set of problems, stopped the shots after hives and 9 months of hell), I've changed my eating habits, started practicing yoga. Last year I had seamed to reach a peak with the yoga. I was to advanced for beginning classes, and didn't have enough muscle control for intermediate classes. Then my fatigue got worse, the distance I could walk before I lost control of my foot had decreased by half. I decided to try everything, all the while thinking in my head that the slow progression to a wheel chair was starting. I went to an Internist, a new Neurologist and then decided to try private Yoga lessons to get some new direction on my workouts. After a couple of months working with my instructor, she began to focus on the areas that were causing the most trouble. Then she went to a couple of instructor workshops given by people who had relieved there own medical difficulties by practicing Yoga. It has now been 9 months since I've been practicing with a private instructor and I'm happy to say that I'm noticing significant improvement in my muscle control, ability to balance and my energy level has doubled!!! I can once again walk a mile before my foot gives out and my goal is to reach 2 miles by next year. I am a firm believer in a positive attitude and listening to your own body. For me Yoga and diet seam to be a great answer!

Great news! How did you change your diet?

I try to eat only fresh, healthy foods. Sort of a combination of low carb, high fiber. The whole diet thing started because I was getting too fat from not exercising. The more I exercised it seamed the more tired I was. I have a fruit smoothie with protein powder for breakfast, a healthy lunch that includes green vegetables, and then a light dinner, mostly vegetables and some kind of beans. I also have a friend who is a nutritionist and she informed me you get the most efficient energy from protein.

Hi Mona,

thats really great news, I hope the improvements will go on! I never tried yoga before, but it sounds good to me.

Seems also to be a great idea to change the diet (not only course of the weight :) ). I really like vegetables, so its no torture for me to eat healthy (although my boyfriend prefers meat). Maybe we could start a thread with our most wanted salad receipt...

So Mona, wish you all the best!

Thanks! My current fav recipe is baby spinach, arugula, red onion, fresh raspberries, almonds, feta cheese, mushroom and fresh steamed asparagus! Further proof of veggies, my husbands grandmother just reached 94 and doesn' t wear glasses, use a cane and still drives. Her diet has been largely vegetables and fruit most of here life!

Bon appetit!

I mostly like a iceberg lettuce with radish, mushroom, tomato, feta, tuna and cucumber, combined with sunflower seeds at the moment. But yours sounds more inventive to me - I would never had the idea to add raspberries to my salad!!
Thank you very much for this idea!
I recently tried melon with cucumber and dill, I found that recipe in my low fat cookbook. It was interesting taste, seems to be very funny to combine fruit and vegetable, although I find it really uncommon.

So bye for today, Antje

Hello!

Thanks for sharing your good news. I like the idea of yoga and will have to try it. As for diet, I love the Swank diet and have followed it for a year now. I also cut out anything sweeter than fruit.

Good luck to all!
