Jimmylegs...too much vitamin d = ouch?

I'm on day two of painful, numbish, feet, calves, and hands and it's starting/revving up after my 4000iu vitamin d with 200mg mag glyc. There's a bit of nausea and reduced appetite too. Is this too much vitamin d/hypercalcemia? Things have been pretty normal for a few days before this started.

I'll skip the d tomorrow but as usual I am too impatient to actually wait to know something. Whadya think? (Besides get the levels tested :P)

get the le.. oh fine ;)

send me your full regimen including timing, maybe I will be able to spot an interaction or dynamic that could benefit from modification..

600am 500mg valtrex
730am dha-EPA and 1000mg flaxseed oil
Breakfast
930am raw one for women multi, 100mcg selenium, 22mg chelated zinc, 5000mcg b12
Lunch
130pm 4000iu d3, 200mg mag glycinate
700pm 200mg mag glycinate

The 930 is full of no nos, I'm sure. :P

I will wash out this week and call doc for bloodwork. D, mag, calcium, zinc? Anything else?

washout and tests sounds smart. the regimen looks not bad.. except yea with that 5000mcg b12 at 930am.. are you having trouble sleeping at night at all?

as for bloodwork, add serum copper (to check the copper zinc ratio) and serum ferritin.

more later - I am procrastinating just by being on here right now :S

OKAY got that sucker done.

so remind me if you are off gluten or not?

also what amounts of copper and ferritin are in that regimen?

once you've got your results back we can get a clearer idea which regimen modifications might be needed.

Thanks jimmy. You're the best. :)

I do need to get that b12 checked. Especially since I got it way too high on CAP. I've not had any problems sleeping until the past two nights.

There is 1.5mg copper and 6mg iron in the multi. I am a gluten lover and will be til the day I die. What is life without bread?! Lol

I think you caught my impatience bug. Shouldn't we wait for the numbers to come back before we start tinkering? I've never gotten my d levels up above 32 no matter how much I took or how much I baked in the sun. I've never reacted to it either. The rituxan may have thrown me out of the ms norm zone. I'll post the lab results when they come in and then you can work your magic.

Don't work too hard!

heya no worries :)

there's a circadian rhythm to b12. levels are not typically high in the morning. what that means for timing supplements I am not exactly sure, but I would tend to favour taking a supplement, especially a sublingual one, at times when levels are meant to be naturally higher. that's the only reason I brought it up.

so. it is possible there's not enough zinc in the mix, if you have gluten in there too. could be linked to your difficulties getting d3 levels up. bloodwork, yay!

how am I impatient? what did I *just say* about when your results get back??! silly!

I will keep an eye out for results :)

and, thanks. I am ZONKED. but, the show must go on. in the final stretch now.. one last big crazy week then it will settle down a little. whew!

Doh! You used your special moderator super powers to change that "when results are in" part! :P. You always bring out the stupid in me.

I got the paperwork for the labs today. Will test next Monday. Except for a mild headache everything feels normal after skipping supplements. I'll be able to sleep tonight. Yay!

What's the big project?

lol I did no such thing :)

sounds good re lab stuff.

I am so tired. couldn't work.

it's the first semester of my master's wrapping up in the next week or so, so things are nuts. plus a funding deadline in the mix. tick tock tick tock :S yikes!

One day we shall have to call you master jimmylegs. Lol. I can't wait.

So almost all of the neuro symptoms are gone but now I am physically drained instead. What do you suppose was in the supplements that was keeping me going. What do calcium and d throw out of balance?

You don't have to answer that unless you feel like procrastinating some more. :P

lol! let's hope I can convince my supervisors that I know what the heck I am talking about :S

hmm I didn't see calcium in your regimen below, what's motivating the calcium/d3 question specifically?

as for the fatigue, it's really hard to say what's what when you have so many different things in the mix. do you feel particularly drained at any specific time of day? or is it uniform tiredness all day long?

Motivation for calcium/d3 witch hunt is my guess that the d3 is causing hypercalcemia because taking d3 hurts like when I take calcium. I think I've had calcium tested before and it wasn't out of wack so I don't know why that happens either. There is a tiny bit of calcium in my multi.

I've been a slug all day and haven't been for more than a week, I think. I think that could be too much d or calcium too. Won't know a darn thing until I get lab results back. Even if you did have an answer, I couldn't test it out without messing up the washout so I just need to suck it up and wait. Harrumph.

Quit procrastinating!

Grumpymoose

Edit: My apologies for gruffness...I just read the MRI report I had hidden from myself. No wonder you don't get many mris! "Your brain is a shrinking lump of Swiss cheese." Good stuff. I'll never look at another of my own mris or reports again! Worse than csf labs. Argh! I think ignorance may truly be bliss...and I might just get there if my brain keeps shrinking at this rate. Ooo. I think I found a bright side!

hey there hope you are doing ok with the washout. I have never had pain from taking d3, but if it hurts like taking calcium hurts, then I think your idea is as good as any. I have definitely had backache (kidneys?) from taking calcium before. will be good to have the bloodwork. no worries re being grumpy :) everyone's been there.

anyway. today was the last day of class, woo hoo! just projects and deadlines to square away now :)

Congrats on finishing first semester. :)

So...I cheated. I took one 200mg mag glycinate two nights ago because I was getting muscle soreness from the flu. Within an hour, all my skin from neck to knees was burning. Wth?! It kept going all night and gradually cleared out over the next day (as my fever and sickness increased).

How's that for being a hot mess? Ideas? Was I banking all of those supplements but unable to use them and now I can? This is ridiculous! And blood tests aren't really a reliable measure of nutrient levels so they won't help explain this or will they?

hiya, I am not sure what is going on in your case but I definitely think the blood tests will be useful. absolutely.

here's what I think about blood tests. yes, it may be only a fraction of the total amount of a substance in your body that shows up in blood. but, I would think that to a degree it's the amount floating around in your blood that determines how much can be stored elsewhere in your body.

and, serum levels do vary with intake (among other things). aaaand, serum levels are used *all. the. time.* in health and disease studies. so if we can clearly see a serum difference associated with health vs disease, why not make use of this information. this aspect will likely require a place in my thesis ;)

unfortunately I have no idea what interactions might have been affected by the Valtrex. your reaction is so odd.. it sounds more like you took a couple hundred mgs of niacin, not a couple hundred of mag glycinate!
