Work from Home dilemma

Hello,
My husband has MS more than 10 years, he is not driving anymore and has issue with walking and keeping balance. He is working the same company (as a developer) and now he is trying to negotiate with HR that he'll work from home 1 day in week. It'll help us a lot.
They are not allowed him to do so. Some people who is living more than 30 miles from office allowed to WFH.
Can they fire him if they know that he is having MS? I am thinking maybe doctor notice can change their mind?
What the best way for us to negotiate HR's decision?
Any advise?

Thank you.

When I was in a similar situation a few years ago, I contacted the company occupational services nurse (through my manager) to try and work out ADA mandated adjustments to my work situation that would help me with my decreased ability to be productive. This was fruitless at the time but when it came time for me to apply for disability benefits with help from my neurologist, the input and understanding of the company nurse was very important in my receiving company sponsored long-term disability benefits.

Every situation is different, no doubt, but if your husband's job ratings are going down because of his inability to produce at his previous level, a company layoff my be coming at some point.

If this were to happen, it would help to have on his record that he was aware of this situation and had tried to identify adjustments that would help maintain his productivity.
