Chapter 9 Magnesium in edema and blood brain barrier disruption
Abstract
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is constituted primarily of brain capillary endothelial cells and is a pre-requisite for the maintenance of brain homeostasis that is essential for optimal brain function. However, a variety of pathological conditions, such as sepsis, multiple sclerosis and epilepsia disrupt the BBB integrity and lead to the development of brain edema. Ionized magnesium (Mg2+) is a crucial cofactor that plays an essential role within the cell and regulates a variety of biochemical reactions. Changes in intra- and extracellular Mg2+ concentrations influence the functions of cells and tissues. A growing body of evidence suggests that Mg2+ plays a pivotal role in ameliorating BBB disruption via a number of mechanisms during certain neurological diseases. Systemic delivery of Mg2+ may constitute an alternative approach in the future, both to improve BBB integrity and to decrease brain edema in the course of a variety of diseases involving brain tissue.

Very interesting... I do supplement extra magnesium and a few other minerals as I dont eat red meat but I am always concerned about balance. Too much of one mineral can block the absorption of others. It's tough to determine what you need and I dont have the money to spend on weekly blood tests.

In other words too much fo a good thing is VERY pertinent when supplementing minerals vitamins and others...

weekly lol!

yes in spite of the much greater tendency to mag deficit vs mag excess, balance is quite tricky and so i like to advocate for whole foods as the basis for any supplement regimen. as well as testing, esp when the supplement is dosed at a therapeutic level. it's a matter for individual experimentation at whatever pace the budget can accommodate.

i have learned over time that i'm relatively lax with testing compared to some. all the same, i did learn not too long ago that dropping back from 50mg zinc per day, to 50mg every other day, does not keep me where i want to be long term. meanwhile if i was on a gluten free diet, that story would likely be a little different.

imaginary happy place: if this diagram were in 3d and you could click on each element in the system and adjust levels using some kind of slider, and watch the effects on the rest of the system.

also i need to know the difference between interactions in soil, and interactions in people (i think to some extent it must depend what kind of soil.. i do remember having a bit of an aha moment a few years ago, in wetlands class)

I guess the good news is Mg tends to give you a rather "ugent" notification when you are consuming too much.

I prefer a chelated magnesium, less of the element but arguably the best absorption.

Tolerance of oral magnesium (bowel-wise) varies a lot.
It depends on many factors such as:
1) The person - some can't tolerate oral Mg supplements even though they are low in Mg and exhibiting Mg deficiency symptoms.
2) The type of oral Mg
3) The amount taken per dose - spreading Mg supplements out through the day is very important.
4) Acidity level in the stomach
5) Etc.

In my own experience:
I used to take 2,000 mg per day (400 mg x 5) of TRS Mg glycinate in addition to topical Mg treatments.
These days I can hardly tolerate 200 mg per day (bowel-wise). Even though some Mg deficiency symptoms have improved (most notably constipation and lack of energy), I still have Mg deficiency symptoms (muscular - both vascular smooth and skeletal) that respond nicely, but temporarily, to Mg foot soaks.

i go back and forth between magnesium glycinate 180 mg and magnesium citrate 200mg. no probs with either, but i'm sure i'd run into side effects eventually if i tried to take 3 mag citrates in one day!
