My Cousin is 30 yrs old and was diagnosed with MS 4 yrs ago.
Sunday he had a pain in his abdomen, was delirious and running a fever of 103.9. He was able to walk until the fever hit. His brother carried him to the car and took him to the hospital. It was a UTI and Yesterday when I went to see him ,The doctors said the infection spread to his BLOODSTREAM!!!. His fever is down but flutters between 97 & 100. He has been there 3 days and not walked...
I NEED TO KNOW what to expect? ( I am not next of kin but he is like a brother and I feel shut out by his mother)

Side note: He was previously able to function somewhat normally aside from sometimes when his speech would slur, he would fall, he was unable to control his bladder and could not maintain a job. The disease seemed to be progressing fast as his wife announced a week ago she wanted him out of the house and a divorce (which he was strongly against)

Sepsis is very serious, I'm so sorry for your family. The hospital will be working to get rid of the infection first, before his MS can be assessed. It will be important for the hospital to know what, if any, disease modifying drugs your cousin has taken for his MS. These can mute or change the immune system, and something along the lines of plasmaphereisis, or a blood transfusion, might be needed. Make sure the hospital knows his current MS medications, and his neurologist is contacted.

of course, Alicia. This must be scary. Your cousin needs your advocacy...make sure the treating doctors know all they need to know. Hang in there, and more prayers coming to your cousin, you and your family.

A serious infection like this can dramatically worsening multiple sclerosis symptoms (known as pseudoexacerbation), but he will hopefully improve just with treatment of the infection.

The theory is that demyelinated axons are very sensitive to any physiologic stress, so symptoms can be temporarily worsened in the setting of stressors such as infection. This is even in the absence of active nervous system inflammation.

It sounds as though he may have had a brewing UTI for a while before he became seriously ill. I think there is every reason to be optimistic that he will improve so long as the infection can be treated. It sounds like he has a difficult social situation, so hopefully you can give him some social support while he is going through this.
