Anybody taking imuran?

My doc has suggested me to start taking imuran. Any experiences, pl share.

Imuran is also known as Azathioprine. It's an immunosuppresant commonly used to prevent rejection of transplanted kidneys. I believe that making informed decisions is vital in choosing a path of medical treatment. To that end, you may wish to read a description of Azathioprine from the Mayo Clinic.

imuran is probably comparable in efficacy to beta IFN in relapsing multiple sclerosis. Potential side effects include gastrointestinal upset, elevated liver function tests, and immunosuppression. Imuran is easier to take and less expensive compared to beta interferons but is probably somewhat less safe. it is mostly used in developing countries that do not have access to MS drugs. It is also used in people with multiple autoimmune diseases or people with central nervous system autoimmune diseases that are not clearly MS.
To be fully effective, it is necessary to do follow up blood tests to make sure the MCV (mean corpuscular volume) has risen. Often, the goal is MCV > 100

According to the Prescribing Information and the Mayo Clinic description, there are also increased risks of lymphoma, skin cancer and PML.
