"Looking at it historically, early man was a herbivore and evolved into an omnivore"

This is likely true and It is thought that early man started to evolve tremendously fast with regard to brain function at a certain point in time (about 1 1/2 to 2 million years ago, when due to migration and the lack of plant food, he was forced to consume animals. It is thought that as a direct result of eating animal meat and fats early man's brain evolved. Fat provides tremendous energy especially for the brain. An interesting fact about our brains: The brain is composed of about 75% water and is the fattiest organ in the body, consisting of a minimum of 60% fat.

Consider that our closest animal kingdom relatives, monkeys and gorillas, remained herbivores, and did not evolve like man did.

This Amazon video, free to prime members titled "The Perfect Human Diet" goes into detail with regards to how and why early man's brain evolved and that the consumption of meat/fat was the primary the reason why. The most interesting info about this starts at about 36 minutes into the presentation. This is by no means an action packed video but it contains a tremendous amount of relevant information and insight as to what humans should be consuming food wise for maximum health. If you decide not to watch the whole video, at least watch about 5-10 minutes worth from the 36 minute mark.

One more interesting bit of info, population groups like the Inuit and Eskimos that have ZERO incidence of MS have existed and done extremely well, especially when it comes to health, on a high fat diet.

High fat diet puts the body in ketosis. No insulin required. But being 61 with BPH now I worry more about prostate disease which results from fatty diet.

Primate Carnivory and Its Significance to Human Diets (1978)

"Recent studies of primate ecology and feeding behavior have expanded our knowledge of the diet of free-ranging primates (summarized in Clutton-Brock and Harvey 1977), especially concerning the degree to which primates consume animal prey. Many primate species once considered herbivorous are now known to expand the animal-matter portion of their diet to high levels when it is possible to do so. Here we describe patterns of animal matter consumption by primates and identify phylogenetic, ecological, and behavioral principles of carnivory applicable to primates and possibly to omnivores in general. This analysis may enhance understanding of the meat over consumption phenomenon typical of contemporary luxury human diets."

Chimpanzees and Bonobos are both 99% genetically identical to humans.
