This is the US MS Society's summary of the ECTRIMS 2007 conference:

I asked one of my neuros about the conference. He said there was an "amazing" presentation by Dr Dr Aloisi about EBV and MS. This research will be published soon. A summary of the presentation is given below:

During a special session, Dr. F. Aloisi (Rome) described further work exploring B cell follicles and the possibility that their formation could be linked to an infection of B cells with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, the virus linked to infectious mononucleosis and other disorders). Using techniques to unravel the presence of EBV in brain tissue samples from people with MS, they showed possible signs of accumulation of EBV-infected B cells and plasma cells in the follicles and in MS lesions. They also showed evidence of an immune attack toward EBV-infected cells in the MS brain. Although previous studies have suggested that exposure to EBV increases the risk of developing MS, possible evidence of the virus’s presence in brain lesions was lacking. This study by an international team is bound to stimulate other investigators to attempt to replicate their findings and to seek further evidence of a direct link between EBV and MS. Thanks for the update on the EBV research.

As an aside, I find it rather strange that the NMSS summary doesn't mention Campath.

On another note, the Accelerated Cure Project recently announced a draft updating their analysis of pathogens and EBV is included. I think it's a great summary of research to date on many suspected pathogens.

This is the one of the possible MS causes that I'm really starting to believe in. When I was in 6th grade, many moons ago in the 70's, I had mono. It was considered a text book case (literally) and my pediatrician took pictures of my red rimmed puffy tired eyes for the textbook he was writing at the time.
I was dx'd in August of '06 but in thinking back, I know that some sensations I was feeling back in the early 90's like numb fingers when I got a fever were probably my first MS symptoms.
Does anyone else look back and identify sensations from years ago as possibly the earliest MS symptoms they had but didn't know it at the time?

Absolutely, at least for me! I have had a tremor in my right hand since early high school. When I was first dxd with MS the neuro I first saw attributed the tremor to MS right away. He had been studying symptoms such as tremor for years and could associate it with later development of MS. He was the head of neurology at Ohio State Univ. Medical Center and he was very well respected in his field. I think most of us have had symptoms that we can see in retrospect. I don't think MS just happens one day-it is a gradual occurence, although the defining symptoms may seem to come on quickly. I think that is why so many people have difficulty being dxd. They go from doctor to doctor with one symptom then another, never putting two and two together.

I complained about symptoms when I was 17-- fatigue and inability to move around in the heat, right foot drop, right side symptoms, all exactly the same things I experience now. My gp blew me off cause I was so young. Even though i had a family history!! Tried to file complaint to ins company, got nowhere.

I really hope this is what triggered the ms in me. It's too late for me unless they find a cure but I would worry less that I will pass ms on to any of my kids.

Worry less, but if you have a member of your family with MS, you are genetically predisposed to getting it. Ii worry about my son "getting it" constantly- same physcial make up as me. ALWAYS SICK- allergies, asthma, just like me. It stinks all the way around the not knowing..
