My neurologist appointment yesterday

Was AWESOME!! He spent over 2 hours with me, talking about many things. He was actually more interested in hearing about what I had done in life and my artwork than anything :)

He said he treats many with burning mouth syndrome, and he's familiar with the treatment methods for this. He began by discussing neurontin, and then he actually asked me what I think I should be taking. Woah.... a doctor who values my opinion?! So I told him Amitriptyline, because not only has it been shown to work for BMS, but also migraine prevention (I'm a migraine sufferer) and depression (I think this is actually more a part of my life than I let on).

So he put me on a combination of neurontin and amitriptyline. 10mg of Amitriptyline 1 at bedtime, and 100mg of neurontin 1 at bedtime to start. After 1 week, I increase the dose of Neurontin to 200mg twice daily, then after 2 weeks 300mg of Neurontin 3 times daily.. to when I will take 300mg 3 times daily, and more at bedtime. I may not even get up to a dose this high. It depends on when the burning mouth finally disappears. Then I'll maintain that level until otherwise directed.

So very happy with the visit in general. He answered a lot of questions and showed me what my lumbar puncture results look like... a little computer print out with 2 bars, 1 representing my blood, the other my spinal fluid with bands in it. Really neat!

Great news, having someone on your side makes such a huge difference!
My first neuro was a depressed negative fellow. I left him not because I thought him poor but because I could not take his negativity. My next doc was a great upbeat kind of guy with a "let's se what we can do" attitude. I loved that. Sounds like you got the same kind of fellow!
