Bit miffed today i had a letter off urology with a date for Urodynamics testing.. but i was told by my nurse and Neuro that it would be pointless due to having no urine output at all.... how would they measure my flow? Also a chart came with it asking me to write down how much i void at how many times a day for a week???? i do not void at all??? :dunno: :wtf:
Im getting really worried about the urologists at the Gwent hospital....

Am i being silly? has anyone else had urodynamics? is it worth my ehile turning up?

Cheers Rachy x

Hi sweet, ya i had it done before i knew i had ms. unforunatly for me the dumbass urologist that i was seeing could not identify that i was too young for BPH or anything to do w/ my prostate. After two pointless surgeries i finally went to a nuerologist w/ my back pained and he identified the problem on the first mri. All my dr's are in Houston med center that is supposed to be some of the world's best. Leave it to me to find a bad apple. My urodynamics where pretty much pointless too, after they filled my bladder and said ok piss, i said ok and nothing came out. This was done by the same quack dr. Now i see the same urologist that my nuero uses and he has never even mentioned doing that test again. He was very staight forward w/ me and told me on the first visit about the whole ms and not voiding thing. So now i cath.
i hate the way that even sounds. i know you can relate, but we do what we have to. I shiver to think were i would be if i had not started doing it though. I had already started leaking and my cysto had shown some very bad indication that my bladder was being damaged. well i hope this helps you or someone else that reads this. I know this is the internet and none of us will probably never meet but it is still something i have a hard time opening up about. to be completly honest w/ you i think that doing a urodynamics test would be a waiste of time , atleast for me.

This sounds really dangerous to me. If you are not voiding, where is all the fluid going?

These doctors must not understand the urgency of your problem.

Fifty percent to 90 percent of all MS patients will experience bladder dysfunction during the course of the disease, and voiding dysfunction is the presenting symptom in 10 percent of patients. Therefore, it is imperative that one consider MS in the differential diagnosis of patients with sighnificant voiding complaints.

This problem started happening back last december but as i was only retaining small amounts it went un-noticed but in January i went into complete retention. I ended up with severe kidney infections..
I am having to self cath 5 times a day .. i rang the urology dept this morning and they say i should attent the appointment as they want to check for any damage caused with self cathing and reataining large amounts of urine ..
My question is why the hell has it taken them so long to do these tests if its so important... im really angry now!

Rant over

Grr! Doctors make me so angry sometimes! I presume when you say, " not voiding at all", you mean that you can't " let go" voluntarily, and need to catheterise yourself. It's very common in MS and there are a number of options that could be discussed with a continence adviser – including the intermittent self catheterisation that you do now – but really, doing a urodynamics test is a complete waste of time.
All the alternatives carry some risk of infection, and some doctors are so hung up on this that they completely fail to see that this is a small price to pay compared to the devastating effect on your quality of life of continence problems. Not only that, but retention and/or leakage carry their own risks.
Trying to be generous for a moment, (and it's not easy sometimes!), testing to see if your bladder is damaged in any way may be worthwhile, but I should have thought an ultrasound scan would have been far better,

can't let go - can't relax... that sounds like our friend magnesium to me... the spasm fixer... wonder if it would do any good...

Thanks TwistedHelix, glad to see I'm not the only one that feels this way!!!

as far as the mag goes, well maybe I have not been taking it long enough but it hasn't done anything for me in this area. :?

oh and the magic pharmacist said to take potassium with the magnesium. i've been reading up on this and it does look promising. i had heard before about the potassium:sodium ratio, i read that it's supposed to be 5:1, but is more likely to be 1:2 because we consume so much salty stuff.
Potassium plays an important role in smooth muscular and cellular functioning, cardiovascular functioning, muscle contractions, nerve transmission, in conversion of glucose into glycogen and muscle building etc. Potassium in body is necessary to monitor and regulate aldosterone (hormone found in human body). It also plays an important role of a catalyst for many types of enzymes inside the human body, in other terms; it helps in spawning many important chemical reactions inside human body. It is believed by many people (doctors) that Potassium helps in improving ATP hydrolysis.

Potassium is called Natural Diuretic as it easily gets absorbed by our body and almost 85-90% of it is excreted from our bowels and kidneys (urine). Because of its alkaline property, it is a very important mineral which helps our body system to maintain of pH level balanced and also to maintain proper level of water inside body. The most important function of Potassium in human body is to keep blood pressure under control and help in intra-cellular nutrient transfer. It also helps in keeping acne, some type of allergies, fatigue, kidney stones etc. problems at bay.

It is very important to take healthy and Potassium rich diet everyday in order to keep our body functioning properly and feel healthy.
