Getting to Grips with MS

The local branch of the MS Society is runnign a course called 'getting to grips' - It starts next week and will run for 6 weeks, one evening a week. There will be neuros, MS sufferers, the local MS therapy centre etc coming to talk.

In the first week there is an opportunity to write down questions for the neuro to answer the following week. Any suggestions on what to ask - the truth is I still feel like I know nothing when it comes to MS & like I am still groping around in the dark. I'm hoping that this will be an opportunity to learn more!

Thanks

George

George,

You will learn a lot at the meeting and will come up with questions based on the responses of the lecturers.

I can't think of anything to ask that hasn't already been addressed on this site. Let us know if anything earth shattering is brought up.

Your question is an opportunity. It's out of character for me to want the opinion of a neuro nowadays, however, Here's an interesting quesiton that many here ask and many here answer (including me) but we have such a diversity of answers - it would be interesting to know what a genuinely degreed and experienced neuro has to say.

What supplements do you recommend taking and why and in what dosages? If it's a long list, what would be the top five.

I meant vitamins and supplements, like the stuff you get a GNC.

also my neuro recently referred me to a throat specialist down the hall, who WOULD NOT accept that magnesium helps my throat, even as it took effect right before his eyes. he gave me a BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION PROTOCOL. i just picture his psyche with its eyes squeezed shut and its fingers in its ears, wailing lalalalalalala i am not listening

The two Neuros my girlfriend talked to last month were negative on diet/supplements regimens, and proposed interferons, their argument being that nothing has been proven to work. They may be right, but my girlfriend said they were unaware of any research on supplements, although there is definitely a significant number of studies suggesting that supplements/diet can potentially be beneficial. So for the moment we choose to disagree with them.

However yesterday we met a personal friend who is a doctor (not a Neuro),who said that if she had MS she would definitely go for diet/supplements.She also had a look at our supplements list and dosages and she thinks they are pretty safe :-) .(If someone wants to have a look at the dosages the supplement list is in the natural approach thread)

George,if i could ask one question it would be what the doctors think of the current drug pipeline. There seem to be 3-4 drugs planned to hit the market over the next years that look way more efficient that interferons, should we have 'great expectatons'?

Isn't the ability to read sorta required in med school? I mean there's written tests you have to take to get in, right? It's not like we need touch screens for that too, is it?
