Health insurance

I was booted from my state coverage when I was awarded Social Security in July. Which means, I don't have coverage and can't find a carrier who will cover me. I'm so scared. I have notified my senator, the insurance commissioner, and every MS organization I can think of.

Does anyone know where I can go?

Doctors won't see me w/out coverage so I can't get a prescription for anything. Where should I be looking?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm assuming you mean you were awarded Social Security disability benefits. If you qualified for SSI, I believe you qualify for Medicare now. If you do not qualify for SSI, there is a two year wait, beginning from the month you first received disability benefits, before Medicare kicks in.

That's correct. So what can I do for insurance until July 2012? If you know of any resources I'm missing please let me know. Thank you.

I have Blue Cross with a generic prescription drug plan. I haven't had trouble with finding a doctor but definitely with the drugs not being covered. My assets and income are low enough to have qualified for the patient assistance program for my Betaseron and I have applied for the Provigil patient assistance program.

I am in southern California and here a county facility or ER I don't believe can turn you away even though you have no insurance. You need a prescribing physician to apply to patient assistance programs. The Betaseron costs me $75 for a three month supply. Maybe there is a way you can be followed at a county facility for care based on income.

When I qualify for Medicare next April, the patient assistance program(s) will most likely kick me off as there is a Part D drug plan with Medicare. Betaseron is a "tier 4" drug, highest patient cost apparently, so ironically when I get Medicare it may be my financial downfall.
