High Fat Diet Speeds Recovery Of Spinal Cord Injury

Hi everyone,

I didn't see this on the site here and so i thought that this was interesting story and that i'd post it as it's a clinical study on rats showing that high fat ketogenic diet helped their neurons heal from spinal cord paralysis after a break in the cord which had me wondering if the Ketogenic diet could possibly help in Multiple Sclerosis.

I've read about how it helps in Epilepsy and it's also in clinical trials for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and ALS. Anyways i thought i'd pass this along for those interested.

The title of the article is "Low-Carb Diet..." and I suspect the mechanism at work in the diseases mentioned (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS) is that the low-carb diet reduces the body's insulin response.

I think a diet low in carbohydrates, rather than high in fat necessarily, makes the difference. It has been observed that a calorie restricted diet improves MS -- restricting calories will necessarily restrict carbohydrates, too.

Hi Lyndacarol,

I messed up on the thread title as i should have stated ''Low Carb'' and not just ''High Fat'' and so i appreciate you bearing that out and it seems that they were saying that it's the Ketones that are helping the Neurons heal more so than just low insulin levels was my take on it.

I wonder if there's been any studies on low carb ketogenic diets for Multiple Sclerosis or other autoimmune disorders.

I have read articles that report that a calorie-restricted diet improves MS symptoms; I have not heard of any studies of ketogenic diets/MS. It would seem to be a VERY good area to investigate.

Thanks for the info on calorie restricted diets although i know that it would be tough for most to follow. I know Ketogenic diets help in Epilepsy and i also read some studies on Pub Med showing that it helped ''mice'' with ALS improve in clinical studies but i sure can't find much on the net. Anyway it was an interesting read about the Neurons healing faster on the diet with a spinal cord break.
