Playing Hockey

I was not sure where to post this, so forgive me if it is in the incorrect forum. I would like to know if there is anyone who has been dxd and is currently playing hockey. (old timers/beer league stuff) I know that this is truly Canadian question but I have played since I was about 5-6 years old. I have not been playing this year as the foot drop in my right foot is starting to effect my skating. I still coach but I would like to know if anyone has had the same experience and what they are doing to compensate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi jjmagpin,

I was dx in Dec 2004, and although I don't play in a league, i do play shinny 2-3 times a week with a few friends on a local rink.

Biggest thing is just to know your limits... don't push it too hard.

What position are you? Goalie could be good (or bad depending on who you talk to :P )

Also, might be a good idea to let one or 2 of the guys know your condition, just in case.

Keep fit and have fun! (sorry... couldn't resist)

Meegs,

Thanks for the response. Can I ask.....do you battle any foot drop/toe drag issues? Funny you mention being a goalie. I have never played in the pipes but given some of these challenges, I was thinking about that. That is a huge change though.

jjmagpin,

No foot drop, however my whole right leg/torso was numb for about a year.
I just adapted my skating to be a bit more left heavy and also stopped crossovers (THAT was hard, but worth it... falling down every time was a wee bit embarrassing when I was practically born with skates on my feet!)

Goalie could be a nice change for you, depending on your stamina, but yah, would for sure be a huge change.

Let me know how it goes!

All the best,
Meegs
