diagnosed early yesterday morning

last week i woke up with double vision, and my feet had a numb/tingling feeling. i thought i just slept on the wrong side of the bed.

i came into the emergency room when the double vision transitioned to partial blindness and my tingly feet were starting to really hurt.

4 large doses of steroids (solu-medrol) and i'm completly fine. i feel none of the above listed symptoms.

MRI of my brain and spine show white matter lesions consistent with a diagnosis of multiple scleosis.
they also did a spinal tap, but that was negative for demylinated tissue.
i am not entirely confident in a diagnosis of MS, but the neurologist is.

he says i need to choose between tysabri, gilenya, copaxone, betaseron, rebif, or avonex.

this is a nice hospital, there are computers with internet access in every room. i took a whole day to read, and am definitley not comfortable with any of those big name drugs. changing, manipulating the immune with drugs does NOT sound nice. i maybe jumping the gun in making my decision, but it's not a difficult choice. i'm going to capitalize on health & nutrition, some physical therapy and i believe i can do this with some support.

iv'e seen some impressive posts here, what do you guys think?

i'm very interested in getting "jimmylegs's" opinion.

Try Dr. Bergman approach. Give it a month and you might cure your MS. Try eating the fruits and vegetables and see if it works. What have you got to lose. Maybe you find you do not need the drugs.

Definitely get a second opinion from an MS specialist (even if your 1st neuro is an MS specialist!) before you worry about meds/treatment.

Your neuro should be happy to give you a referral -- if not, leave immediately and never go back! I recommend going to the nearest teaching hospital that has an MS clinic...

hey there welcome to TiMS :) sorry to hear you're having an unpleasant week :S

questions for you:
have you read my intro piece? if not here's the link.. http://www.thisisms.com/forum/regimens- ... c2489.html
do you think you can get your docs to order you some serum nutrient tests?
what can you tell me about your background that makes the nutrition approach appealing? (very important info.. for one thing, this is how you build scientific rationale for testing, if needed..)

no harm asking for some more assessment before you get fed into the ms machine..! you can answer me out here or via private message, whichever you prefer.

interesting video. he mentions a correlation between brain/spine health to ms. i was told i had a kyphotic spinal deformality a few years back. and yes, i will be eating lots of fruits & veggies.

thank you for your input. who ever i speak with, it'll be the same answer, i need to take better care of myself. im sure ms research has gone a long way with disease "modifying" drugs, but i'll be searching for easier avenue's for now.

HI!!  thank you for welcoming me, i'm very excited to speak with you!

my week could be worse, i recevied a wake-up call thats about it.

i have read your intro post, and am going to try and get all the suspect nutrients you mention within the week.
about me:
work from home single father. i rarely see the sun. i enjoy a mostly vegetarian diet, and love raw foods. lots of salads, rarely any variety. i try to find the highest quality i can, the main reason i stay away from animal products. i dont live in the most enviormentally conscious community. im interested in nutrion because my diet was similar to a garbage can up until my early 20's. i was 255lbs at 19 (5 feet 7 inches tall) i lost most of the weight by 22. some would consider me under weight now at 130lbs on a heavy day. embarassed to say that i am a smoker, and understand how important quitting is going to be.
thats the important backound info that comes to mind, im behind a computer screen, it's as honest as it gets. do you have any other specific ?'s

thank you for your time. im really happy i found this forum, and such a knowledgable community.

hi w :)

love the attitude re the wake up call - i felt the same when i was diagnosed.. if it has to happen, the silver lining is the opportunity to learn so much, and take responsibility (or control, you know, whatever turns your crank ;) )

thanks for the info on you. you might have noticed my prior vegan status, talk about a low variety diet right?? when I read about your early diet and current vegetarianism, i'm sure you can imagine that for me the red flags go up re a bunch of the nutrients that are implicated in ms. you're right about the smoking too.

so! next steps. here are my questions:
what kind of kyphosis did they say it was? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphosis#Classification
when you say you are going to try to get the suspect nutrients - do you mean serum tests, high density food sources, supplements, or all of the above?
can you send a three-day diet and fluids diary? (may as well make it a smoking diary as well, they're nutrient depleters too.. oh and any meds you take regularly.. useful info)
how many kids? how old are they?

that's it for now, no probs, glad you found us :)

If you are not getting sun understand vitamin D is very important for anyone with MS. Should get your vitamin D level check but most people should be on a minimum of 5000IU of D3. It might be better for people with MS to have a higher level.

In addition Id cut out any artifical sweeteners - aspartame breaks down into methanol in the bloodstream (gee thanks Mr Rumsfeld). Methanol is a neurotoxin with symptoms that mimic MS.

Also quit smoking this will reduce exposure to both methanol and formaldehyde in cigarette smoke plus all the other nasties

Avoid air pollution if possible. Interesting there is a link between air pollution exposure and insulin resistance which may have some relationship with MS.
