8O Hello New Friends.... Just happened to mention to my primary care doctor in July that I was having tingling in my foot & calf everyday for atleast two months. I had recently lost 20 lbs on a diet under the care of a nutritionist...This was specifically to lower my cholesterol (and I did)~Well I was examined & sent to a neurologist who after his evil exam told me I had what he thought was Benign MS & it was in my brain & cord! He told me point blank not to worry about being in a wheelchair all that soon. Well I had just lost 20 lbs & thought I was a picture of health & this hit me like a ton of bricks. I was sent for a MRI Brain...which was normal & I celebrated...only to have the neurologist tell me that it could still be in my spine. Meanwhile I was on the Internet & found out about the sweetener connection to MS. I had been using excessive amounts of artificial sweeteners to drop the weight... Equal in my oatmeal, Splenda in my baking, Diet drinks & pop every meal....My primary care doctor agreed with me & said to avoid the stuff & see what happens...The neurologist wants me to continue & see him after the holidays.... I imagine he just figures something else will happen to me before then..? I am 54 years old & understand he has patients newly diagnosed with MS who are 60....My tingling has gone away...Oh I also felt like I had someone grabbing my calf ...Sound weird? What do you all think about this? 8O

Artificial sweeteners

As the resident believer that insulin plays a great part in MS, I think the artificial sweeteners you used contributed to your recent experience. They are many times sweeter than sugar and triggered the pancreas to pump out LOTS of insulin, which is an irritant (like lye) in your blood vessels!

Just MY ideas. But I think you are wise to stay away from them.

My 2 cents are sweetners are part of the toxins I try to remove from our diet. This might interest you

The Connection Between
MS And Aspartame
By Russell L. Blaylock, MD
Neurosurgeon
6-7-4

Recently, much controversy has surrounded a claim that aspartame may produce an MS-like syndrome. A current review of recent peer-reviewed scientific studies have disclosed a pathophysiological mechanism to explain this connection. As far back as 1996 it was shown that the lesions produced in the myelin sheath of axons in cases of multiple sclerosis were related to excitatory receptors on the primary cells involved called oligodendroglia. Recent studies have now confirmed what was suspected back then. The loss of myelin sheath on the nerve fibers characteristic of the disease are due to the death of these oligodendroglial cells at the site of the lesions (called plaques). Further, these studies have shown that the death of these important cells is as a result of excessive exposure to excitotoxins at the site of the lesions.

Normally, most of these excitotoxins are secreted from microglial immune cells in the central nervous system. This not only destroys these myelin-producing cells it also breaks down the blood-brain barrier (BBB), allowing excitotoxins in the blood stream to enter the site of damage. Aspartame contains the excitotoxin aspartate as 40% of its molecular structure. Numerous studies have shown that consuming aspartame can significantly elevate the excitotoxin level in the blood. There is a common situation during which the excitotoxin exposure is even greater. When aspartate (as aspartame) is combined in the diet with monosodium glutamate (MSG) blood levels are several fold higher than normal. With the BBB damaged, as in MS, these excitotoxins can freely enter the site of injury, greatly magnifying the damage. So, we see that dietary excitotoxins, such as aspartame and MSG, can greatly magnify the damage produced in multiple sclerosis. Likewise, excitotoxins have been shown to breakdown the BBB as well.

Of equal concern is observation that we know that about 10% of the population (based on autopsy studies of elderly) have MS lesions without ever developing the full blown disease, a condition called benign MS. A diet high in excitotoxins, such as aspartame, can convert this benign, subclinical condition into full-blown clinical MS. The amount of excitotoxins consumed in the average American diet is considerable, as shown by several studies. In addition, the toxin methanol is also in the aspartame molecule. Methanol is a axon poison. Combined toxicity of the aspartate and the methanol adds up to considerable brain toxicity and can convert benign, subclinical MS into full-blown MS. Once the MS becomes full-blown, further consumption of excitotoxins magnifies the toxicity, increasing disability and death.

Recent studies have also shown that even single exposures to these food-based excitotoxins can produce prolonged worsening of neurological lesions. In addition, it has been demonstrated that autoimmune reactions (as occurs with MS) greatly magnifies the toxicity of aspartate and glutamate (the excitotoxins). We also know liquid forms of excitotoxins are significantly more toxic because of rapid absorption and higher blood levels. In the face of this connection between excitotoxicity and the pathophysiology of MS, it would be ludicrous to allow further use of this excitotoxin containing sweetener..

TREATMENT FOR MS:

It is now known the cause for the destruction of the myelin in the lesions is overactivation of the microglia in the region of the myelin. An enzyme that converts glutamine to glutamate called glutaminase increases tremendously, thereby greatly increasing excitotoxicity. Mercury also activates microglia, even in subtoxic doses.

Any dietary excitotoxin can activate the microglia, thereby greatly aggravating the injury. This includes the aspartate in aspartame. The methanol adds to this toxicity as well. Now, the secret to treatment appears to be shutting down, or at least calming down, the microglia. It has been found that the antibiotic minocycline powerfully shuts down the microglia. I tried this treatment on a friend of mine who just came down with fulmanant MS. He was confined to a wheelchair. I had him placed on minocycline and now, just a few weeks later, he is walking.

The good news is that other things also calm the microglia-the most potent are: silymarin, curcumin and ibuprophen. Phosphatidylcholine helps re-myelinate the nerve sheaths that are damaged, as does B12, B6, B1, vitamin D, folate, vitamin C, natural vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) and L-carnitine. DHA plays a major role in repairing the myelin sheath. Vitamin D may even prevent MS, but it acts as an immune modulator, preventing further damage - the dose is 2000 IU a day. Magnesium, as magnesium malate, is needed in a dose of 500 mg 2X a day. They must avoid all excitotoxins, even natural ones in foods-such as soy, red meats, nuts, mushrooms and tomatoes. Avoid all fluoride and especially all vaccinations since these either inhibit antioxidant enzymes or triggers harmful immune reactions.

Note from Dr. Betty Martini :

Cori Brackett, co-owner of Sound and Fury Productions, an MS victim diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic, had a huge lesion in the brain. Cori was a user of the neurotoxic drug Aspartame, marketed as NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, E951, Canderel, Benevia, etc. Off the poison, she too walked out of her wheelchair; the lesion disappeared. Because of what she had endured from aspartame disease she felt a moral obligation to warn others, especially with 70% of the population and 40% of our children using this deadly toxin. Cori Brackett traveled 7000 miles and with 25 hours of footage produced the movie, "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World." She says it reveals one of the most pervasive, insidious forms of corporate negligence in the history of the industrial revolution. On this date it is being released to the world. You will get to see the famed Dr. Blaylock and other aspartame experts, as well as hear the horror story of the victims. See Diane Fleming who is wilting in a Virginia prison because her athlete husband died of aspartame. She was sentenced to 50 years for the crime committed by the manufacturer who had the malice to market a poison. Don't miss this film. Contact Cori Brackett at Cori@soundandfuryproductions.com or 520-624-9710. http://www.soundandfuryproductions.com

For years physicians have written the MS Society to alert them about aspartame. You can read my letter on http://www.dorway.com/nomarkle.html , never answered, of course. Faced with the choice of warning the public or continuing to receive funding from industry, the MS Society has chosen to sacrifice the victims. And when those responsible to solve the problem ARE the problem it is a sad commentary on greed and lack of concern for humanity. How can anyone set aside professional ethics to allow an MS holocaust, when simply alerting those with MS to avoid aspartame and other excitotoxins could save the lives of thousands. At one MS Society walk-a-thon, they were giving out free Diet Coke's while trying to prevent our activists from giving walkers info that could save the lives of MS victims. I simply turned to the crowd and said: "The MS Society does not want you to have this life-saving information on a product triggering this disease." The entire crowd took copies. Later I received several calls of those who had heeded the advice and gotten well. But I shudder to think how many have perished because the MS Society hasn't had the integrity to warn victims. Have I given myself MS?

This is some of the stuff that led me to my primary care doctor saying...What about this new diet I was on? How do I stay away from methanl...???Have I induced the disease....??? Could I possibly turn it back off like FAST!!!! Afraid to eat anything now.... All this stuff about oils makes me crazy... 8O I just want some simple guidelines to follow so I stay healthy as I can.... I am living in fear that my leg will start up again for something far worse is going to happen...I have awakened the monster with my low fat cholesterol diet recommended by a nutritionist at the Cleveland Clinic who told me artificial sweeteners were fine to use....!!!!! I was also eating a large amount of whole wheat as she told me to do...more than I had ever eaten!!! I lost 20 lbs & got my metabolic fat panel in the normal range but gave myself MS>>?!!!

trust me and science sadgirl you didn't give yourself ms, Please don't deny yourself things you really enjoy that would be a shame..

sadgirl,

i wish you well and success in your journey to some answers.

taking care of your diet is a good thing for anyone to do. but for MSers, i think its important to remember, that this disease and all of its variety of symptoms has been around for many centuries.

personally, i don't believe, that there are modern-day chemicals that are causing the disease.

a very interesting book came out last year that many people have shown symptoms and the progression of the disease before it ever had a name.

Multiple Sclerosis: The History of a Disease
by T. Jock Murray
(2005)

we still dont know what the direct cause is. but we're getting better at identyfying it for what it is . hopefully a cure in our lifetime once the cause is known.

again, i wish you and everyone well!

Hello sadgirl, welcome to our site!

Listen, you DID NOT give yourself MS. MS is a multi-factor enigma and if you denied yourself one indulgence, chances are ridiculously high that something else would have triggered it in you. No self-guilt allowed here! lol.

Artificial sweeteners cause chaos in people with inflammatory bowel disease (something about how the molecule is broken down by the bacteria in the gut). Add to that there is a strong gut-MS link. I don't doubt that one could affect the other but how, why and to what extent needs research.

8O Well I read somewhere (and I've been reading...) that oatmeal can aggravate MS...I never ate it until I started this diet to lower my cholesterol! I must have gone thru several containers of Quaker Oats in six months & eating cheerios at night instead of chips! :D I was eating dried cranberries everyday...I got to love them...never ate them before...Then I read something about pectin in your diet & MS! MAN! I also incorporated Take Control Margarine (known to lower cholesterol) & then I read there is a relationship between sterols & MS! Holy Toledo! I wonder if this nutritionist knew what she was telling me? Oh one other thing I added was ground flaxseed...daily! So you see my whole diet changed & I got a tingling leg!?????? I am now gaining my weight back & eating as I did before....I have been to afraid to go back to those foods... I will never touch the sweeteners again...& gasp if I see it in something I was going to eat!

Sadgirl i ate the same things for years as i do now . i was great and now i'm not, food has nothing to do with it it's genetic and we got it...

Sadgirl,

There are as many theories about the cause as those of us that have the disease. My wife and most of my family drink diet pop and use aspartame. I've never liked the stuff much and I'm the only one with MS. Go figure, but don't blame yourself or attribute it to any one thing. Plus, don't forget that hindsight is truly 20/20. If you go kicking yourself for what "you should have done" but didn't have the information, when will you stop?

Go Bucks!

I think it's tied in with allergies toxins and now glucose levels. Get rid of your intolerances allergens and all toxins you possibly can at the very least it healed John's leaky gut as well as restless leg, eczema ,heat intolerance and the need to use his epi pen. We are like into a year and nearly six months removed from all that crap. That was prior to starting copaxone so diet, vitamin d3, flaxseed and cold water fish, vitamins turmeric and god knows what else factor in. There is so much improved it's hard to remember all the stuff that bothered John. Before we knew he had MS everyone used to tease him that he was allergic to life and since he slept so much they used to say he had a couch attached to his arse. Well none of that anymore but an allergist is a must as well as test for gluten intolerance. The diet that is best is the one that you design for yourself once you know what your body is responding negatively too. IMO it's not use to remove dairy(low fat by the way) unless you are intolerant same goes for grains. Maybe for you it is night shade foods or citrus maybe beef or fish. It is impossible to know unless you are willing to go the distance and run a few basic test.Again opinions but at least it's something to focus on and a direction to head.

Melody i was diagnosed after a bout with ON and a MRI then i went symptom free for 8 or so years so take what you want from that but ms has a mind of it's own and will do what ever and however it wants. The fact that John is good now is great. All i'm saying is that for the 8 years that i was virtually symptom free i could have said it was the taking of vitimins or the eating right or the no aspartame or whatever but here i am now 14 years later so go figure..It just dosn't matter!!!

To add to Melody's info

Sadgirl, first of all, you did NOTHING to GIVE yourself MS! We can only live and eat according to the best information at the time. Lifestyles will change when more knowledge is discovered.

Melody spoke of MSG earlier. About 3 weeks ago jimmylegs posted:

http://www.rense.com/general67/msg.htm

Again, remember that I am the "insulin-believer." Tho the comment deals with rats, I found this sentence VERY interesting:
The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates; causing rats (and humans?) to become obese.
And maybe develop MS if hyperinsulinemia is deeply involved in the disease, as I believe???

:( I probably shouldn't be on this site before I go to sleep...Just lay awake & look at ceiling & think about how scared I feel... I really don't know for sure what is up with me...I have a funny sensation in my mid back...I got a copy of a spinal x-ray taken in September... I wanted to see for myself... They never tell you all of what the report says... Mine said "L4-L5 disc space narrowed...Grade1 anterolisthesis of L4 consistent with DDD..." Could this cause my tingling in my foot? back? Anybody know? :( :(
